EveryonePlays: PALGN and GAME join forces

PALGN Feature | The journey towards an R18+ rating, has only just begun.
To the PALGN Audience,

From the PALGN Admin team: Jeremy, Roland and James

Some games are played by everyone, but some are only meant for those over 18.

Sunday 28 February 2010 is the closing date for the public to submit their views on the R18+ classification, through the Attorney-General’s discussion paper. If you haven't done yours already, check this article out while you still have the chance... However, this is only the beginning.

We are pleased to announce that PALGN, Everyoneplays and GAME have joined forces to keep this debate alive – the journey continues. The debate over the R18+ classification has a long way to go before all State Attorney-Generals agree to amend the current legislation. PALGN, Everyoneplays and GAME are in it for the long haul.

So how can you help?

Visit the new Everyoneplays website, click on the link to find the nearest GAME store and sign a very simple petition…

From 28 February, all the way up until 30 April, you’ll have a chance to sign the following petition:

Quote:
“As of today, Australia does not have an R18+ classification for PC and video games.
This has resulted in many games receiving a lower classification than they otherwise would.
By signing this petition you believe that Australia should have an R18+ classification for PC and video games.”

Head to the new Everyoneplays website here.

Find your nearest GAME store by clicking here.

By heading down to GAME from the 28th onwards and signing the petition, you will have your chance to show that gaming is a legitimate form of entertainment just like literature, TV and film. And once you’ve been down to GAME and signed the petition, you can also let everyone else know about it. In the coming days, we'll be providing you with information on how else you'll be able to help us spread the word. We have the potential to get something really BIG happening here, but we won't be able to do it without the collective force of everyone.

You can follow the process from start through finish, as we'll be keeping you up-to-date the whole way. We'll be giving you regular progress and milestone updates. Also, we'll be providing you with a whole set of features, talking about petitions, opponents to the R18+ rating and the ins-and-outs of banned games. And that's only the start of it.

So, made your submission? Ready to sign the petition? Ready to tell everyone about it? The more people we have to spread the word and visit a GAME store to sign our petition, the more leverage we’ll have over our politicians. So it is up to us – to act now and make a difference!

There is still a long way to go, but PALGN, Everyoneplays and GAME will be here every step of the way. However, we won’t be able to do it without the support of each and every one of you. For anyone who has ever picked up a game controller or bought a game for anyones else, now is the chance for you to have your say and we hope that you will join us!

We're deadly serious about this campaign! Today's Daily Telegraph exposure is just the beginning. The more signatures, the louder our voice. I'm going to a Game store, taking 5 minutes to sign a petition and my voice is there to be heard. I encourage people to think about it - the voice of sceptics will become almost silent over the coming weeks.

This may be invoking Godwin's Law or something but that post Roland makes me think of WW2 propaganda posters.

Except maybe "A Vote for Atkinson is a Vote for Hitler", not that anyone would take the cause seriously if that were happen of course.

Propaganda - C'mon are you serious Jellyfish. It has taken over 12 months to get to this point....why wouldn't you want to recognize all those people involved and see some positive action on this subject.

Hey Roland/Jeremy/James/staff, I was just wondering if you guys have received any feedback from the newspaper article and the petition besides that from our site. If so has it been generally positive/ encouraging? Hopefully not negative and flaming, though even if that is present just wade through the crap, logic is on our side :)

While we were setting this up, we got a lot of positive feedback from a lot of different groups. As for how the campaign is going, it's little too early to tell at the moment, but hopefully we'll have more in the coming days icon_smile.gif

As for some of the other Sydney guys, what stores will you be heading to? I haven't decided which one to go to (from about 4 that are close).

While not what many expected, a positive outlook is the least this will deliver. Power in numbers come first. Let's hope for a great result.

We've got your back guys. Don't worry about the sceptics, we all have differing opinions.

It is really early days. We'll be regularly making updates via social media / on PALGN etc. Cheers!

Cheers to Burnz for upping the DT article.

I dragged my wife (no interest in games unfortunately icon_cry.gif ) into GAME today and we both signed the petition.
She asked why she had to sign it.
I told her that when Logan (our five month old son) is playing games in the future, she doesn't want him exposed to adult material too early, does she?
She agreed and happily signed! icon_smile.gif

It looked like there were plenty of signatures and it was spiral bound, not loose leaves, which I thought was a great idea.
However, I was a bit disappointed that there weren't any posters or signage around the place to bring customers' attention to it.
Maybe this is still in the works, but if it isn't, do you PALGN head honchos mind passing on the idea to GAME please?

I had to wait behind a guy who looked to be in his forties and purchasing a copy of AvP. The staff member made no mention to him about the petition during the purchase. Perhaps he had signed before I got to the counter though.
But I'm hoping the GAME staff will be actively prompting their customers to sign the petition.

There was a small part of me that when the 28th was mentioned thought "oh how sweet, PALGn are throwing me a birthday party" only to then have my hopes and dreams dashed and that small part to weep uncontrollably and threaten action for such trauma.
Mekky and I share your thoughts. icon_sad.gif
Granted, it wasn't that much of a surprise... There's still hope of a birthday party in 15minutes, even if it only involves the three of us, in our ...

I'll probably make it to either Hurstville or one of the City ones, just not sure of when I'd have the opportunity to actually sign.

i got my sisters onboard to sign it.

my mother was also there, but although she was listening, and agreed with the concept, I don't think she'll go out of her way to find a GAME store, there isn't one around her usual shopping haunts.

as for myself, i've also got to go out of my way to get to a GAME store, but will do so asap.

Hey RooRage,

I work for Game in SA and i assure you i am pushing the importance of this issue to the other managers and getting as many signatures as possible. I have visited all the other retailers in my centre and spoken with the staff, only one person did not want to sign. Ive already got 4 pages done and will not be stopping any time soon!!!

But i will also pass your feedback on to our area managers and try and get the staff more aware/pumped about what is going on!

Also i have printed out posters and stuck them on our pylons!! so ill forward that information to game staff also!

Great to hear you're pimping it hard out there!
It's dedication like that, that will get this thing done...

Also, another suggestion, would be to make sure there's a pen attached to the petition --> just makes it easier for customers to sign it right there and then.

Thanks again! icon_biggrin.gif

I was merely commenting on the tone of the post above mine, not the campaign in general. I signed the first petition at eGames all those years ago and I've been pushing for ratings awareness of parents for video games in the schools I've been working at for over four years.

On the other hand I never go to Games stores so I'd usually never have the chance to sign this petition. However luck would have it I and FeralOni had a bit of time spare between legs of our adventures yesterday and were both able to sign the petition at Oakleigh. The staff member on duty appear to be directing people to sign it and providing some extra information so obviously your partnership has been well implemented.

Just signed it at GAME Eastgardens, as did a few others.

The more the merrier!

I will be heading to the Campbelltown store to sign the petition ^^. There actually pretty good staff there imo, so I hope they are presenting this topic to as many people as possible, as with all GAME staff.

Unfortunately for some reason I never got around to signing the one at EB D: (For shame, I know), but my support for this will definitely be backed to more than make up for it. And speaking of the EB one I only went their a few times but they never reminded me of the petition. The poster was great though, always noticed that.

Myself, Denny, Jahanzeb and my mate all went down to storm GAME Eastgardens and add another four signatures to the cause.

A big call out to all the GAME staff is on the cards as well icon_y1.gif these guys are pulling a massive effort to support signatures!

When I told my mum about this, she agreed with our cause and would happily sign as well! Seriously, MOST people are willing to do the common sense thing and support a worthy cause. Believe and spread the word. And eventually, common sense will prevail icon_biggrin.gif

Seems like a date on Thursday to the gardens of water, fearing the infestation of trolls and pixies I have enlisted the services of my sister who has in turn enlisted the services of her boyfriend who comes with the added bonus of the job:Plumber.

So I no longer fear flooding at the gardens of water, do your worst vile shopper fiends!
