Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown announced

PALGN News | Not for consoles yet.
Sega announced earlier this week that they will be releasing a new version of Virtua Fighter 5, this new revision/expansion will be called Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown

Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown further builds up upon the previous revision, which was Virtua Fighter 5 R. Final Showdown will feature improved balancing, new moves, new costumes, new stages and of course, a new character. The game will feature Jean Kujo, who first appeared in Virtua Fighter 5 R and it will also bring back the sumo wrestler from Virtua Fighter 3, Taka Arashi.

The Virtua Fighter games, despite the glowing reviews and universal critical acclaim, have never enjoyed much commercial success. Virtua Fighter is a bit of an aquired taste, rewarding the patient and not the button basher.

There are no plans for a console release yet, but there is a good chance that all these changes and improvements will be made available as DLC. In the meantime, check out the debut trailer.

Hrm looks kind of dated now (character models aren't look to good). I don't think this will be able to hold a candle to SSIV and Tekken 6.

Wonder why they didn't just create VF6.

Virtua Fighter has no competition. It is, without a doubt, the deepest and most balanced fighter ever created. Something I really love about the game is that it filters all the whinging 13 year olds by making progression a gradual affair. This isn’t a game where you can learn a few moves from a single character and expect to win. Oh, and it’s still one of the smoothest online fighters around, even though it’s almost 3 years old. Don’t care what the price is - I’ll be picking this up on release.

I guess Sega prefer to build on perfection and concentrate their efforts on the core experience rather than release a new game with filler junk such as a story mode or redundant mini games.

The day I master this, is the day I know I'm never getting married.

Virtua Fighter 5 utterly destroys Tekken to this day, IMO.

I know what you're getting at and I know VF is an incredibly rewarding game but it's really does seem like bread without butter. Dry.

I do enjoy VF and have bought every single game that's been released on a home console (and will buy this)....but I can't really see myself pulling away from SSFIV to invest too much time into this title.

VF5 was a solid game and was nice visually 3/4 years ago, I sunk about 40+ hours into it (which is way more hours then Tekken 6). The online mode was very bare boned, and I didn't find it any better then what's currently on offer (connection wise).

I love all fighting games but not really excited about this update at all. But we don't' know much about it, so I'll reserve judgment until it's released.

Just seems like a strange time for Sega to release this. I think they'd be better off releasing VF6 will killer visuals and a new gameplay kick down the track. We've had a great number of flashy fighters be very successful recently and I think this will struggle ala KOF12.

Bring on the VF! Deepest FG in existence. But Tekken is flashier. icon_razz.gif

There's something really off about VF, it's the lack of "impact" and SFX. In Tekken, you can practically feel the punch as it lands, whereas in VF, it's like your playing with dolls, really cheap.

That's probably the best way to describe VF. Well said. It does look like two planks of wood fighting.

I honestly 'feel' the impact of moves moreso in VF than in Tekken.

Perhaps it's the oldschool bashing sounds that have long been a stable in the series, or that I find the Tekken flash effects off every hit (and a few moves requiring great suspension of disbelief) off-putting. But I definitely feel like I'm playing a fighter with VF whereas with Tekken I feel I'm staging some nice choreography.

Man, I am so glad you guys care about fighting games.

Unlike a certian person I know who says that nobody cares about fighting games and that they are redundant -_-

Stay hardcore guys! keep the fighting spirit alive!

In Tekken you can at least see whether the hit make an impact or blocked. Whereas in VF you need to look at the lifebar lol. FIGHTING GAMES FTWWW!!

So VF5 feels “dry” because it doesn’t visually impress you? And you think the best bet would be to give it a graphics upgrade and slap VF6 on the box? That’s cool man, I get it – game is too hard, wah-wah, so grasp at straws. I say stick to your flashy graphics and explosive punches and forget about real fighting games.

The online worked, which is more than can be said for a fair few fighters these days (including your favourites Tekken 6, KOF12 and even SF4 to a degree). For a game which requires no lag whatsoever, it managed to do an awesome job back then, and still holds up well.

KOF12 struggled because it was pushed out the door before it was done. It was a huge visual upgrade but that’s all it had going for it, which not only contradicts what you’re saying but also speaks volumes about what people want out of a fighter. VF has its fanbase, and Sega are well aware of their target audience and how well this will sell.

Yeah... it's probably best if you only comment on a game if you've actually played it.

I have a fondness for most fighting games, i couldn't master KOF though.... that was beyond me icon_confused.gif. I'm not the greatest at them all, in terms of skill level i'm average (also depends on the difficulty level i play on, or the person i am playing against). I still find them fun to play.

Not sure an updated VF 5 is warranted, move on to VF 6 icon_biggrin.gif.

Whatever man, why are you talking to me like I don't know what I'm talking about? I've pumped many hours into VF over the years. I was probably playing VF and Tekken in the arcades when you were crapping your pants. It's a great fighter but I do, rather, I WOULD LIKE, Sega to mix it up. What's wrong with wanting a coat of paint, better online modes, new gameplay mechanics?

If VF5 got released today next to most of the new fighters it would have got panned just as KOF12 did. Granted it had a good single player portion (the arcade quest), the game was still pretty bare boned. My biggest gripe is and has always been that the VF cast is just dull and have no personality. They are all pretty damn boring. The characters I do like (Lion and Jackie) are dicks and I can barely listen to them harp on when they win. What's a game without personality.

So stick your straws dude.

You can save the superiority dribble. Anytime you actually feel like backing up to those words you can hit me up on Live. Moving on. There’s nothing wrong with wanting better graphics or features, but you’re saying VF5 is shit and incomparable to the current crop due to it looking so terribly inferior. I’m simply telling you that I think you’re wrong and that if you feel that way, look elsewhere for your fighting fix. VF is about fighting, not crappy mini games or tacked on story modes which are nothing but cringe-worthy time wasters. It may be bare bones for someone such as yourself but to the fans, it’s exactly what they’re after.

Again, KOF12 sold poorly for a few reasons, but most importantly because it wasn’t up to scratch. Online was shit and the game in no way lived up to the hype produced by the pretty graphics. VF5 is in another category. It’s the greatest technical fighter there is and would easily succeed in today’s market, just like this add-on will if it ever gets a console release.

I’m not gonna sit here arguing opinions with you for 20 pages but, basically, I’ll agree that updated graphics are welcome but not necessary for VF to succeed. I wouldn’t be against new VA’s either because Lion is indeed a dick, but it’s not why I play the fighter almost exclusively. IMO VF5 looks pretty damn good, but if you feel otherwise and think that graphics are make or break, then look elsewhere. We done here?

I never said you don’t own the game (or that a friend of your has it or you’d rent it for such an occasion), I implied you didn’t play it for long enough to form an opinion. I’ll stick by that regardless of what pics you post.

What are you even on about flame? I’m giving my views on a game I like in a topic dedicated to it – you’re the one who came in here and implied that anyone who plays the game is a fat slob who will never have a relationship and does nothing but play VF all day. But by all means, continue with the hypocrisy.

You sir are very passionate about VF5. I thought the sony fanboy's were bad. *looks at zero and dlo* =D

Would you be angry if i said that DOA is a better fighter than VF5?

In all seriousness I found VF5 not as user friendly when i first started playing it compared to the mainstream fighters currently on consoles, The game is extremely technical and very hard to master, it's a great game once you get into it, umm it's an awesome game actually.

I have only played the xbox 360 version of the game, and the online was fantastic from what i remember, I didn't expect that they would release a 3rd? version of VF5, unsure if the PS3 version is different to 360.

I do hope that they release a console version of this, how did the sales of VF5 go on consoles? I'm sure it wasn't as popular as Tekken 6, Soul Calibur 4 and SF4.

At least people can stop asking for VF5:R for console now, maybe that's the reason why Sega didn't release a version of the 5:R because they are going to release this.... :O (hope so)

The trailer makes me want to chuck VF5 back in, so I reallllly hope they release on console.. Damn you sega marketing team!!!
