Nearly half of gamers don't know about DLC

PALGN News | And not many of us buy it.
When you first purchased your shiny new console, were you aware of the ability to purchase additional content via downloads? You know, like that awesome Zelda-themed mini-skirt for your gender-confused Sackboy? Well, it appears that many gamers aren’t aware of the pleasures and rip-offs of downloadable content, according to a survey conducted by media consulting firm Frank N. Magid Associates (as reported by IGN).

The survey of almost 800 gamers found that 43 per cent of them had no idea additional content was available. The survey also found that only 15 percent of the respondents were aware of and have purchased DLC and 41 percent said they are aware of DLC, but haven't purchased any.

The findings probably shouldn’t come as too much of a shock, with Mike Vorhaus, President of Magid Advisors, saying that those gamers who are unaware of DLC were typically playing consoles like the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo Wii, which aren’t as active in the DLC scene.

PALGN also suspects that young gamers and parents just simply aren’t aware of the additional capabilities of their consoles of choice, including their online capabilities. In fact, we remember there were many people who were not aware of the PlayStation 2’s ability to play DVDs, and we suspect that many people continue to be unaware that consoles do anything other than play games you insert into them.

However, the fact that 42 percent of people haven't purchased additional content even though they are aware of its existence would be of the greatest concern to gaming companies. The survey perhaps serves as a lesson - provide quality content and don't simply try and cash in and DLC has the potential to grow gaming revenue.

By the way, we’re also not quite sure why the results of the survey only adds up to ninety-nine percent. Perhaps the other one percent were busy disconnecting the PS3 so they could watch a Blu-ray on a standalone player.

I don't think I've bought any DLC - certainly none that I can remember at this particular time. I'm really looking forward to the AC2 DLC, though.

Not really surprising. I still know people who haven't put their console online yet.

I'm not a big purchaser of it other than for games like Rock Band. Other DLC would have to really appeal to me. It's mainly because I like to play games and sell them rather than keep one game and play it to 100%.

A few people I know haven't even put their console online (ps3 or wii) and others are worried about the security issues of putting their credit card details online. Once you explain to them about getting PSN or wii points vouchers like iTunes, they are more relaxed about it.

The main reasons why people tell me they haven't put their unit online are: 1. don't know how (usually its wifi that scares them off) or 2. I don't want to play them online (which requires the explanation of the other benefits of putting them online - game patches and system updates).

^^ me too - other than Rock Band, I haven't bought any DLC - there's far too many other games to play than to just play one.

Too bad the survey was with such a small group.

If it was huge and the vast majority was like that, maybe developers would complete their games rather than holding back and deliberately leaving it to DLC.

dlc is a ripoff. enough said.

... so hey, I'm a total DLC addict!

In other news, I need a new hard drive. I wonder if these two facts are related...

In some cases I like DLC, like BioShock Challenge Rooms or Little Big Planet Levels/Kits. I really like to stick to a small selection of games and get as much out of the one disc as possible. like LBP which I've completed 100%, new DLC for that is always something I keep my eye on just because it was such a good time.

I actually don't like the idea of DLC for music games, its usually too expensive for not as much fun as I think its going to be.

I regret downloading the extra Metal Gear Online levels, because I hardly play those maps anymore. Map packs generally annoy me for some reason...

I like DLC that adds substantial content, such as an expansion to an XBLA game. Sometimes I wish more games would take advantage of that, as in theory it should be cheaper to generate the content after the game engine has been designed.

Fluff type stuff, I won't touch though. Do people actually buy those theme packs?

A fair majority of the time I am not aware of DLC being released.
An example of what COULD be organised:
Xbox Live requires a registered email address. they know the games I have played. Can't they link the two and email me when DLC for my games are available?
I happened to stumble acroos a shedload of DLC for Lips the other day. Songs my missus loves to death. (In hind sight I probably shouldn't have downloaded it!).

I am one of those people who doesn't even have her consoles online!

I don't really care about DLC or any other online features..

On my PC obviously I have online but I have never bothered with buying DLC. It doesn't really interest me... I would if it was for a game I really really loved though. But there hasn't been DLC for games I've really loved as far as I know!

I haven't come across any DLC that I think are worth the asking price (360).

I also don't like the fact that you can't borrow/lend to friends like you can with physical media.

I don't like how you can't just buy the correct amount of points on the 360, instead of being forced to buy in amounts of 400point/lot or 500points/lot or whatever and the DLCs aren't priced at even/round amounts and you are left with odd amounts that you can't really do anything with. They should just let you buy the DLC without you trying to figure out the virtual currency.

Here are the reasons I rarely buy DLC (only purchased a handful of offerings);
1) I didn't know of it
2) by the time the DLC comes out, I'm done with the game
3) pricing
4) lack of content to warrant paying for the DLC or coming back to the game

Lol, I'm one of the people who know DLC but don't buy it ><"
It's also good for me to mention that the survey seems pretty true because when i mention DLC to my friends, alot of them don't know what it stands for/what it is.

I love DLC, and usually snap up anything that comes out for a favorite game of mine (for example I have both GTA expansions, all the Motorstorm 2 track/livery packs, a few LBP level packs and have bought and will continue to buy all the Beatles Rockband albums). To me it's a great way to get further enjoyment from games I might have finished but still want something new to go back to.
It frustrates me though that people fork out hundreds of dollars on consoles but don't know half the things they're capable of. Working at EB, I've had a couple of people not knowing their PS3s play Blu-Ray movies, or even that the games themselves come on Blu-Ray discs, despite being plastered all over the box.
But yeah, anyway. DLC: Love it.

PSN is the same. You can only get $10, $20 etc put in your virtual wallet so if you're just $2 short you have to put $10 into your virtual wallet.

Apart from quiz packs for Buzz on PS3 i havent purchased any DLC. Mostly it seems its stuff thats been excluded from the games original release to make money OR is simply too big for my download quota to handle.

I purchase it from time to time, if it's something big such as Fifa's Ultimate Team addon, GTA IV: TLAD, Burnout Paradise (free + paid for dlc) - i have to balance my monthly download limit and as such, i tend to wait until the last few days before my plan rolls over.

I still havn't claimed the free dlc for forza 3 for that reason (not enough mb's to spare).

I only buy dlc for a game that I really love. But even then it has to be lengthy and high quality. There really isn't that much good DLC out there. Fallout 3 and Oblivion, and I guess more recently Borderlands seem to have the right idea.

Also I used to be big into PC gaming so I'm used to huge expansions opposed to challenge rooms and character outfits.

I bought Yoda for SCIV ages back on ps3...

Broken, green little troll. At least I learnt how to fight against him when I was still playing that game.

Could be that each individual percentage ended in something less than 0.49%.

The people who know about DLC are probably the informed gamers out there.

It just means gaming is becoming a lot more popular and it isn't taboo anymore.

I'd go so far to say it hasn't been considered taboo in my lifetime. Everyone I know has some form of gaming console.
Everyone.
