The survey of almost 800 gamers found that 43 per cent of them had no idea additional content was available. The survey also found that only 15 percent of the respondents were aware of and have purchased DLC and 41 percent said they are aware of DLC, but haven't purchased any.
The findings probably shouldn’t come as too much of a shock, with Mike Vorhaus, President of Magid Advisors, saying that those gamers who are unaware of DLC were typically playing consoles like the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo Wii, which aren’t as active in the DLC scene.
PALGN also suspects that young gamers and parents just simply aren’t aware of the additional capabilities of their consoles of choice, including their online capabilities. In fact, we remember there were many people who were not aware of the PlayStation 2’s ability to play DVDs, and we suspect that many people continue to be unaware that consoles do anything other than play games you insert into them.
However, the fact that 42 percent of people haven't purchased additional content even though they are aware of its existence would be of the greatest concern to gaming companies. The survey perhaps serves as a lesson - provide quality content and don't simply try and cash in and DLC has the potential to grow gaming revenue.
By the way, we’re also not quite sure why the results of the survey only adds up to ninety-nine percent. Perhaps the other one percent were busy disconnecting the PS3 so they could watch a Blu-ray on a standalone player.
