Rumour: New Call of Duty title set in Vietnam?

PALGN Rumour | Wake up screaming like I'm back over there.
The dust has barely settled on the battlefields of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and rumours are already circulating about the next game in the franchise.

As fans will know, the games are now made in a cycle, with one being made by developer Infinity Ward (Call of Duty 2, the Modern Warfare series) and the next being made by developer Treyarch (Call of Duty 3, World at War). In the current generation of consoles, Treyarch’s efforts have continued to focus on recreating historically accurate war scenarios, whereas Infinity Ward has taken the series into the fictional realm with the Modern Warfare games. Well, it’s Treyarch’s turn at the helm again, and the hot rumour is that this one will take place in Vietnam.

While nothing official has yet been released about the game other than it will be released sometime in 2010, some corners of the internet are speculating that the yet-to-be-named 7th instalment in the series could take place in jungles of 'Nam. According to Computer and Videogames , the game may focus on “the struggles of each individual platoon member. And pacing of the game is rumoured to follow movies such as Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket.”

While it’s still too early to know for sure, it does seem like a pretty solid rumour as Vietnam was a brutal and controversial war that has been captured successfully in film and television many times, giving the developers a solid base to work from. However, are we starting to tire of the Call of Duty series with the current release schedule of a new game every year with three games already out for the current generation of consoles? Or will we continue to love them as long as they maintain the quality?

The COD franchise is over-saturating the market..... and they don't seem to be doing anything that new.

I've heard that it's supposed to span the entire Cold War.

Which would be pretty fun.

Wait... What? How could that possibly be fun at all? Unless this is a joke... Sarcasm doesn't work so well on the internet.

A friend of mine had a lengthy chat to some old Italian soldier who said the public knowledge that the Cold War had no combat was untrue, and that he himself had gone on covert bombing mission for the US to take out Soviet spy stations close to US soil.

So there's that...

Well, you know...if you are tired of all these CoD games...don't buy them!! Or more specifically, don't buy the Treyarch ones. =P

Neither is any other FPS game...When a developer does try something new, it quite often fails miserably. So what incentive is there for innovation? Anyone who doesn't buy the innovative titles forfeits the right to complain that games are all the same.

The problem was, although there were some covert missions, and a lot of proxy conflicts, the cold war spanned like 50 years. That's just not practical to put in a game, as the vast array of technological improvements will make the game into an Age of Empires fps (wait a second...Genius!)...

I'm all for a Vietnam game, it was by far my favourite conflict depicted in games and movies (although that's probably because of the music). I'm so, so, tired of World War II.

Nonsense. They could get Infinity Ward to develop it and just have tons of characters, having them each die in their single levels.

So no solid, cohesive narrative? The cold war was hard enough to follow in clearly outlined documents of history, let alone put together as one completely story, as it was mostly about political jabs, diplomacy and economic/industrial threats. Its just not a reasonable ask, as the amount of completely different weapon sets, textures, etc, would make the game huge, or feel incomplete. Plus, the people fighting were barely ever Americans and Russians, but the countrymen of any country they wanted to have a squabble over. Although it would be pretty killer to fight in heaps of different countries like Korea, Greece, Afghanistan and Cuba etc, the game would cost unholy amounts to make if it was to have the same level of polish as the Modern Warfare games...

Couldn't agree more with music!. Battlefield - Vietnam has War as the main song and it's highly catchy!!! .

The idea of a series of games based around the Cold War is pretty neat though. Damn. Actually, y'know what? Here would be a dream project for me.

A series of games, each taking place in a different theater. Korean War, Vietnam War, one based around the Bay of Pigs/Cuban Missile Crisis, maybe one around KNOWN espionage, etc.

You could structure it like a videogame documentary, with tons of bonus content. Damn, I'd be behind that.

I don't there's been a good cinematic Vietnam game. BF:Vietnam doesn't count as it was a great multiplayer game. The main problem is it isn't a popular war. And the American's lost. How can you display the many viewpoints of the war. The cold war is ridiculous unless you tie it to a time. Will the multiplayer be who can build the most weapons without your economy going bust?

I just hope they don't completely copy MW2, and actually balance it out more and give guns spread/recoil. And make snipers more powerful. And heaps of other things I can't be bothered typing.

How long has it been since the most recent Vietnam War game?

I would really like to play this, depending on how well they do this.

It won't be a complete copy of MW2 as Infinity Ward won't be making the game, if anything the gameplay would be more like World At War.

They just need to make sure they include Chuck Norris in the game somehow, then it would be an instant hit.

I'm not tired of Call of Duty!!! Modern Warfare 2 is actually the first I've played, and I've bought World at War now, but haven't started it yet. I hope they bring out Modern Warfare 3. A lot of things stood out to me about MW2. The gameplay is awesome, the story is awesome, and realistic or not, I LOVE that your character heals if he's not shot for a few seconds. The difficulty of the game is almost perfect, although some of the special ops missions are ridiculously hard, even on the easiest setting!

But, they better not stop yet!! I have a lot more Call of Duty money set aside still (not really, but in theory I do!)

I think they should cover America's unsung contributions to world peace and fighting tyranny, like when they backed Saddam Hussein in the Iran-Iraq war, or trained Osama Bin Laden to fight the Soviets. It would really fill the yanks with patriotic pride!

I'm waiting for Call of Duty: Let's Stop Fighting and Hug It Out.

I'm still waiting for the future Call of Duty which Infinity Ward was going to make, instead they made CoD4 which in retrospect is awesome but a future shooter by IW would be amazing.

I was making a joke because Modern Warfare 2 lacks any kind of solid, cohesive narrative.
