Dead Space 2 Announced

PALGN News | Hold on to your limbs.
We all knew it was coming, but EA and Visceral Games formally announced today that Dead Space 2 is on the way. What's more, the protagonist of the first instalment, perpetually mute and beleaguered Isaac Clarke is also making a comeback.

We are informed that Isaac will again take up the fight to the Necromorphs in the action-horror follow-up. He will have new weapons at this disposal, though we've yet to find out what these will be, as well as new characters to meet and new environments to explore. According to the press release "this time, he calls the shots", which has us wondering what this will mean.

"We're thrilled to jump back into the series, making the next chapter in Isaac's journey. The infection continues to spread throughout space and our hero Isaac Clarke is the only person able to contain it. There are still loads of necromorphs that need killing!" said Steve Papoutsis, the game's executive producer.

Details, such a release date, are fairly thin on the ground, but it would not be a vast stretch of the imagination to expect Dead Space 2 to hit shelves around Halloween of 2010. The title is due for release on Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Stay tuned to PALGN for more information about Dead Space 2 as details come to light.

Entirely expected, but still great news. The first was one of my favourite games of last year.

Oooo, very exiting! I can't wait to see where they set this one. Will it be planet based, Earth based even? Another blockbuster for 2010! icon_dance.gif

This is music to my ears. I just hope Capcom is willing to take notes this time round.

I really don't like how this is sounding. Isaac is no intergalactic space hero, he is just an engineer who had a REALLY **** day but happened to be tough as nails.
Dead Space is a great new IP, here's hoping they don't mess it up.

Did we cry foul when Half-Life 2 was announced as well?

I know exactly what you're saying, Nic_231, but remember the transition of Ellen Ripley's character from Alien to Aliens? That was pretty satisfying, and it would be an interesting thing to see in Isaac's case. He can't be the unlucky engineer again, surely - better that he becomes proactive instead of reactive. Hopefully we get some real character development... Isaac certainly has alot to be angry about.

I'm also wary of the story. They'd better have a good reason to bring back Isaac. I don't see why they'd send in an engineer with weapons, unless they plan to rip th entire Aliens story off and go 'come with us because you have had experience'.

Unless it's more like Alien 3 where he crash lands on a planet and the infection has gone nuts and he is trying save the planet...

The Alien tie-in is concerning.

I should really go back and finish the first Dead Space.

Your point is entirely valid Michael, and I see how Isaac could be developed in that way, but I think it would somehow lessen the overall impact of the game. At the end of Dead Space, when he pulled of his helmet and collapsed into the seat of the ship, his pure exhaustion brought the whole survival horror concept home. Here was an ordinary man who had done all he could to survive. He wasn't looking for more fights, he wasn't hardened and ready to kill alien scum, he just wanted out. It seemed like nothing in the world could take him back in to that horror, and I completely empathized.
If I were Isaac, no amount of space cash could get me fighting necromorphs again, I would take that ship and fly as far away as I could, never looking back.

Need I remind people again... Half-Life. I'd have more faith in an engineer to get things done than a scientist. So long as it involves beating the crap out of stuff.

To elaborate a hint the developers have stated for the Sequel, the starting location for Isaac is a space station known as The Sprawl.

For those of you that have played Extraction on the Wii, you'll learn that another character has arrived there beforehand, during the events of the Isaac's encounter on the Ishamura. I won't spoil it for those of you that decide to try Extraction out, but this character plays a relatively important role in the Dead Space universe.

Awesome. Loved the first Dead Space. So Event Horizon. The ending was the most epic boss scene i have seen in gaming also, that thing was massive and the cinematics surrounding it was equivalent of a top-shelf Hollywood Blockbusters.
