Australian sales charts, week ending 29/11/09

PALGN News | Once again, Nintendo proves its blockbusters have more staying power than the competition.
For the second week in a row, Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the top selling game in the country - and we wouldn't bet against it holding onto the position until next year. Also batting for the Wii is Cricket, up three spots to second place - no doubt the first test match of the summer helped to increase its sales. Keeping the sports theme going is Wii Sports Resort, surging up seven places to close the week in third. Re-entering the charts in fourth place is Mario Kart Wii, making it four in a row for Nintendo's little white box. Meanwhile, Infinity Ward's blockbuster shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, has slipped again this week, with the PS3 version landing in fifth place.

It's back to the Wii at six, as Wii Fit Plus managed to sneak up an extra place over last week's finish. At seven and eight lies Assassin's Creed II, with the the Xbox 360 edition faring slightly better than the PS3 version. Both suffered big drops in only their second week on sale, though. Modern Warfare 2 makes another appearance at nine, this time on the Xbox 360, with the PC version having disappeared from the all format top ten. Closing things out for us is - shock - Wii Play, which by this point has to be the most expensive drinks coaster going around.

The charts are updated weekly and are provided by those wonderful people at GfK.

Seeing the PS3 version of a multi-plat game outsell the 360 one is still a bit of a novelty for me, I'm happy that Aussie games have adopted the PS3 so strongly now. icon_smile.gif Things were looking shaky for a while there. All three consoles are on a pretty even footing now, we have a good fight on our hands which is always a good thing for us gamers.

Yeah, I'm glad too. But it's very strange that a FPS is the title that is the most popular on the PS3... coming from Halo fanatic and endorsed competition

Assassins Creed II also outselling MW2 on the 360 version as well which I find odd on that platform. I wonder what the trend is like around the world.

Remember Activision made the claim Modern Warfare 2 was going to be the highest selling game of the year, possibly of all time. I wonder how that is coming along.

Didn't it have the highest launch of any game ever? That was only two weeks ago, there's probably not that many left to buy the thing.

The 'of all time' claims were ridiculous to begin with.

No way... that honour would have to go to a Wii game, they've consistently been on top of the charts all year.

Are we at the point yet where we can take Wii games out of the videogame charts?...sigh.

I know it's probably getting old hearing this but it's a toy, it should be counted as a toy and so should most of its software. No narrative = toy. That's just my opinion anyway.

^Does that mean FIFA10, The Sims and Gran Turismo who are in the charts but not a Wii game this week should also not be included?

Not all games requires a story. Face it, Wii is popular and I don't care what people think, it's a gaming console and NOT all Wii gamers are casual gamers. You can be hardcore and still have a Wii.

in that case any game with crap mechanics should be considered a toy.

There's probably just as much casual crap, if not more, on the PS2 but I doubt anyone would be defining that as a toy.

Anyway, I really wish they would release sale numbers instead of these crappy charts each week. What good are they without the numbers?

And, more to the point, it's a stupid generalisation that Wii games have no plot/story/narrative/depth/style/etc. Some of the best games of the recent years have been on Wii, alongside quality titles on all other platforms. The Wii is a less powerful machine than the other contenders, fact - doesn't mean it doesn't produce quality gaming experiences.
