This Week's Releases - 09/11/09

PALGN Feature | You'll want to take this call.
This week, it's the game that gamers have been waiting for. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 invades Australia this Tuesday, with several retailers opening their doors at midnight. Picking up from the events of the first Modern Warfare, players assume the role of a international taskforce solider thrust into a deadly conflict between the forces of good and evil. Confirmed locations so far include the snowy icecaps of Russia and the political heart of Washington DC. If you're looking forward to more than the single player campaign, there's an entirely new multiplayer mode to delve into. Infinity Ward has packed in new weapons, perks and a number of crazy rewards for accomplishing a set number of killstreaks. To cap it all off, a separate campaign in the vane of ‘Mile High Club’ from Call of Duty 4 – know as Special Ops – rounds out the package.

Three separate editions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are being released. The first, dubbed the Prestige Edition, comes with a pair of fully functioning night vision goggles with stand, art book, steel case and a download code for the very first Call of Duty from Infinity Ward. While most retailers have already sold out of the Prestige Edition, the next version, the Hardened Edition, is generally still available. The Hardened Edition comes in a steel case and includes the same art book and original Call of Duty download code. Finally, if you're feeling adventurous enough, there's always just the plain old standard edition. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The Wii is getting an adapted version of first Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex, while the Nintendo DS is also joining the party with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex.

Next up, Mario is back on Wii with New Super Mario Bros. Wii arriving on shelves this Thursday. In classic Mario fashion, players can run, jump and propel themselves through numerous worlds with Yoshi as their sidekick. New Super Mario Bros. Wii also allows for up to three other players to get involved in the action.

If the first two games weren't enough, Jak & Daxter return in Jak & Daxter The Lost Frontier on PS2 and PSP, and Ghostbusters also arrives on PSP. Shaun White makes another outing in Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage on Wii, while Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers Of Sky is released on Nintendo DS.

Just get call of Duty in a few months. You wont be missing anything. People will be playing like crazy and there are so many other games out already to complete.
Damn, three games I want this week and not enough dough. I think I'll get MW2 and A Boy and His Blob, because I think the latter is a budget title.

Nintendo's big platformer comes back at the same time Sony's does.

Man, I have missed Jak and Daxter. The original was amazing and even though the rest of the series has gone in a slightly different direction, I can't wait to play the new one!

With Gran Turismo, PixelJunk Monsters, Motorstorm and Soul Calibur lately, I've played more PSP than anything and J&D will add to that.

Couldn't agree more. COD6 lost me when they took away my LAN games.

On the otherhand New Super Mario Bros with 4 player co-op may just get the dust off of my Wii.

I'll probably pop over to the shops tomorrow and pick it up(MW2). Not that I have much time to play it but for some reasons I feel I should get this game day one.

Thanks for explaining! :P

No matter what they say it's still Call Of Duty and therefore number 6.

Actually Modern Warfare 2 is technically the thirteenth, if you counted all of them.

Wow, 13 Call of Duties in what, 5-8 years? Pretty ridiculous.

I find Actvisions process of not counting certain games as true sequels - case in point the Guitar Hero series.... even though Guitar Hero 5 is out, they're really up to Guitar Hero 9 now icon_razz.gif

they're side games though.
1. gh
2. gh2 + gh80s (running off the gh2 engine)
3. gh3 + aerosmith (gh3 engine)
4. ghwt + metallica/smash hits/van halen (all modified from the wt engine)
5. gh5 + band hero (big surprise, its using the gh5 engine)

admittedly there's more if you factor in the handheld games (i have no idea how many of them there is now) but i think the bigger problem is activision's insistance on milking the hell out of a franchise (eg tony hawks).

it's strange to think that a few months ago i was looking forward to purchasing MW2.

call me when they bring back dedicated servers. and mods and LAN.

Only interested in J&D and Mario Bros but don't own a Wii.Might see if I can pick up J&D and now that MB is out I will have to start saving for a Wii.

Two months ago I would have been anxiously awaiting my COD MW 2 to unlock on Steam.
I would still love to give the game a play but I feel like I have to take a stand against all the elements of it's development that I disagree with. Sure, it has mouse control, in game text chat and the ability to customize your graphical options, but the lack of dedicated servers, the overpricing and (braces for incoming flames) the terrorist scene are just too much.
If I buy this then it just paves the way for further terrible treatment by publishers. Stay strong Nic, stay strong...

Dragon Ball: Raging Blast is being released here in the US the same day as Modern Warfare 2. I'll be picking up the former instead of the latter. I'm also one of many who will be getting Assassins Creed 2.

I might end up getting Assassins Creed 2 the same time I got 1, at the end of the year.
