Borderlands DLC ready... already

PALGN News | Before the game hits retail
In what has become a common event for new released games in 2009, the not-yet-released Borderlands already has downloadable content announced for it. To be known as "The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned", the content will be available for all systems.

The press release tell us you’ll be tasked with keeping the workers of Jakobs Cove alive. Some fellow named Dr. Ned does his job a little too well, and creates – Shock! Horror! - zombies and other undead mutant things that now run rampant in the new gaming area. Players will work with Dr Ned to cure the inhabitants. The DLC will feature “new enemies, new quests and rare loot drops".

Without having played Borderlands (because it isn't available yet), we have no idea if this will be a good thing or not. However, if early buzz is anything to go by (and it generally is), this will be a good thing. But we can’t help but wonder why they couldn’t have fitted the additional content on the disk in the first place. Oh right; money.

Borderlands is available next week.

I got an email from 2kgame about a 'Mercenary Weapon Pack DLC' the other day.

so yeah, not just one?

Make a game.

Strip 20% of it out.

Cut that 20% into 4 or 5 bits.

Sell each bit seperately for $9.99.

Make 150% profit for each game sold that the owner buys all DLC.

Welcome to next-gen gaming.

Seriously, this DLC penny pinching pisses me off. Phreakuency got it right, they make the game, strip stuff out of it, only to add it in later.

I hate to burst your cycnicism bubble, but in a lot of cases that same stuff would have been cut from the title regardless due to time/budget issues. Given that DLC is an expectation rather than an optional extra these days, and what I just said, it kind of works out well in most cases.

like weapons, that would have been already coded into the game? and have an unlock code?
i have no problem with missions and stuff like that as dlc, but weapon packs and stuff that are already in the game, greed.

Weapon packs, yeah... that's dodgy.

I'm sure this would happen alot and i don't see a problem with it, the games ready and we will be playing it next week so whats the problem with them starting work on DLC?

I really doubt they have already made this and just left it out of the game but hey if you wanna have a cry about developers supporting their games be my guest.

A weapons pack for Borderlands would be especially dodgy - there is apparently millions of weapon combos.

I'm cool with DLC, but annoucing it before the game is out...not cool...

I, for one, think DLC is fine. It's like collectors editions/directors cuts/limited editions. If you enjoy a game, you should pay that bit more to get more out of it. Making a game is an expensive business and you want to get as much ROI as possible. If you don't like it, don't buy it!

In regards to Borderlands DLC, they had a twit comp for some yesterday.

"FOLLOW US ON TWITTER AND SEND US A DIRECT MESSAGE FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN THE GEARBOX MERCENARY WEAPON PACK FOR BORDERLANDS.

SEND ‘PANDORA PS3’ FOR THE PLAYSTATION 3 CODE OR ‘PANDORA XBOX 360’ FOR THE XBOX 360 CODE. THE FIRST 50 DIRECT MESSAGES RECEIVED FOR EACH WILL WIN THE CODES! "

I grabbed some and i was late to the party so there may be some left. Their twitter account is 2KGames

Forget the DLC - I'm still waiting if the retail release is going to add-up to anything more then hype. I mean this type of game has been tried before (hellgate london anyone) - no reviews / comprehensive previews beyond the 5 min E3 players less then a week out from release dosen't bode well.

Bingo LeonJ, my thoughts exactly - I feel cheated/short changed. In fact, I purposely held out on buying Fallout 3 because I knew they would eventually release the game with all the DLC. Should've done the same with Borderlands instead of pre-ordering it.

It just got 91% in Atomic PC.

One thing that should be more well-known is that most DLC content would not exist otherwise. Such post-release support was all but unheard of before this generation of consoles - even on the PC side. An expansion pack in a year or two if you were lucky.

Of course, the bottom line is you don't have to buy it, so you can wait a month and pretend it's brand new.

Developing a video game on this scale is a large and complex software project. It is not uncommon for sotfware to be released without features/content that were orginaly planned. If DLC didn't exist there is a good chance that this stuff would have been on the chopping block for good.

they didnt put what is now going to be dlc into the game because the created the dlc when the game was already in certification, retards. actually research something before u come up with ur idiotic assumptions. randy pitchford(ceo of gearbox) said this in almost every recent interview. it takes about 5 mins to find this out. good job guys, way to show off ur impressive IQ's.

and there is a ridiculous amount of previews for borderlands. am i the only one that has discovered youtube? most of the good gameplay footage is seen in the interviews but there is at least 3 official trailers for the game. not to mention the 3 u can watch right of the bat on the borderlands website. jesus christ....

hi welcome to the forums,
perhaps you can explain to me how youtube videos, trailers and interviews = having played borderlands, with your impressive iq.
