Over the years, fans have listened to music from Metal Gear Solid, Super Mario Bros., Shadow of the Colossus, Neon Genesis Evangelion and several other popular video games and anime, all being played with great passion and energy by a talented group of musicians.
A Night in Fantasia itself has evolved significantly over the years as the Eminence Orchestra continued to expand and enhance the way the concert was conducted. We have seen them bring in famous Japanese composers to appear as guest musicians, which include the likes of Nobuo Uematsu and Go Shina. In 2005, they introduced the use of visual images and videos to make the concert more interactive and stimulating for the audience. A Night in Fantasia usually takes place in Sydney but in 2006 it also ventured into Melbourne. The set list continued to expand each year, with new pieces from various video games and anime.
After the amazing A Night in Fantasia 2007 there was a hiatus but Eminence continued working on other projects. Fortunately for us this hiatus is now over, as in less than a week we will witness the grand return of A Night in Fantasia.
A Night in Fantasia 2009 is scheduled to take place on Saturday 26th September 2009 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. This is the first time that the concert will take place at the said venue. To the displeasure of some Australians, the concert will only take place in Sydney this year. Still, Sydney was the very birth place of A Night in Fantasia and Eminence.
There will be several guest musicians attending the show this year, big names from both Japan and the United States. In the past we have seen guest musicians from Japan only but this year for the very first time, composers from the United States will also be making an appearance. These talented American composers include the likes of Steve Jablonsky (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), Inon Zur (Crysis, Prince of Persia, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age) and Cris Valasco (Starcraft II and God of War). There will also be some special guest performances. Aubrey Ashburn will be performing a piece from Inon Zur's score for Dragon Age. There will of course be other exciting performances by guest musicians, so keep an eye out for our upcoming interview with Eminence founder Hiraoki Yura for the complete list of guest performers.
This year will feature some fantastic music from a diverse range of video games. It will be a mix of classic hits as well as many exciting new performances. The set list will include scores from games such as AFRIKA, Ace Combat 5, Darksiders: Wrath of War, Dragon Age: Origins, Metal Gear Solid, Prince of Persia, Red Alert 3, Idolm@aster, Shadow of the Colossus and many more.
Of course A Night in Fantasia isn’t just about video game music, these concerts have also promoted some fantastic anime music and this year we will hear some breathtaking pieces from popular Japanese animations such as Astro Boy, Death Note and Steamboy. What Eminence concert would be complete without some music from Studio Ghibli animations? Once again we will hear a selection of music from popular Studio Gibli movies such as Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro and others.
This should be a fantastic show!
A Night in Fantasia is set to be much bigger and magical than what we have seen in the past. It has been a long time since we last experienced this flagship concert series, so you can certainly expect a much more mature and improved performance and a better sound quality. The set list will incorporate all the changes and improvements that were made in the past, including the elaborate use of visual images that were introduced in 2005. Eminence has also announced that the concert will be recorded and released on CD and a special limited edition will also accompany it.
The PALGN staff will be attending A Night in Fantasia 2009 and we are really looking forward to a memorable night filled with great performances. Look forward to our upcoming interview with the violin maestro Hiraoki Yura, the man behind it all. We will also have a special edition of the Sound Test where we will look at past performances by Eminence. Finally, there will be extensive A Night in Fantasia 2009 coverage in the coming two weeks. Also, keep checking back on the official site for exclusive updates and media.
Those of you who will be attending the concert, we will see you there!
