PS3 does big sales

PALGN News | Slim + new price = profit.

The PlayStation 3 has seen a great boost to sales thanks to the latest slim model and price slash, with nearly a 1000% sales increase inside the UK alone.

Speaking with Dorian Bloch of Chart-Track, GamesIndustry.biz revealed that while they didn’t have the hardware numbers at the moment, the console had a massive sales week in the UK.

“The sales increase is very impressive, making the PS3 the top selling hardware in Week 36,” said Bloch. “The Xbox 360, Wii and DS Lite all sold around the same amount last week – PS3 Slim outsold each of them by a ratio of three-to-one.”

Famitsu is also reporting the PS3 Slim sold 150,000 in Japan. Numbers from other regions are yet to be confirmed.

Not profiting directly on a console is nothing new notsofat. It drives other income sources too.

Im glad that the PS3 and 360 and getting into the swing of things with the recent price drops and new standard SKUs.

I wonder what the Wii is coutering..... Wii fit 6:Thirst for Blood?

I'm still waiting on them releasing "Wii Fit: Into a Size 16".
Regardless of what negative things some people may have to say about this I think it is actually a positive sign, rather than just the culmination of low supply of recent times. I mean, come on 500,000 in a week? That's one massive freaking jump.
I guess we'll find out in the run up to christmas how much of the spike is due to the slim.

^i'm not hating, the ps3 is my console of choice.. just stating that what the news was stating was stating the obvious

and also 1000% increase is huge market spin/propaganda (dunno if those are the right words, me english is bad), what is the increase from? the previous week before release of the slim..? because that could mean last week they only sold one because ps3 phat were discontinued for months, and 1000% = 100 times, so they sold 100 ps3s (I KNOW ITS IS NOT THE CASE.. just saying hypothetically)

ok so maybe it sounds like i'm hating.. but i'm not.. the ps3 slim was always going to rocket after being unavailable and had a 25%+ price drop.. and the 1000% increase feels like spin..

i'm not a hater!! (i'll post pics of my collection to prove it soon)

Definitely, no question about it. Personally I thought for what you were getting the PS3 was great value even at the higher price point(I did buy one at launch after all...). But Under $500 again hits that sweet spot for a lot of people, and suddenly it becomes competitive against the cheaper Blu-Ray players too.

This all in context though.. I remember seeing something about the PS3 being outsold in Australia last week at a rate of something like 4 to 1 by the xbox360..

People were holding out for the cheaper model for a couple of weeks and picked it up... duh..

You want to check the stats in a few weeks when all the launch buzz has died down. Personally I think the PS3 slim should continue to be healthy leading up to christmas, its now in a more competitive price point.

But it's all good, more PS3's sold = more publishers willing to make games for it. That's all that matters.

One thing I'm pretty excited about was that we got a 40gb PS3 in at work and had a 350 buck price tag on it, that'll only get lower over the coming months making me a happy chicken.

Definitely dropping the price, and even the marketing campaign reminding consumers why they would want a PS3, have helped strength interest, and thus, sales. Who would've seen that coming, hey Sony?

Seriously, when I was younger, I used to think they were the expects are marketing, wonder what happened...

Sales we totally amazing over the past week. Sold one every 5 minutes easily over the weekend. Good for PS3 online community and such me thinks!

well, your OP said that PS3 is out of stock for 2-3 months but that's only for australia. The article was UK/JAP centric for the most parts. Anyhow, it also outsold wii/xbox360 approximately 3:1 in the UK so yes, its doing a okay.

Big Banana who do you work for? 5 a minute is quite good. I think the new pricepoint is winning fans but I don't think I've seen australian ads. I mean, we don't have that snazzy USA pricepoint of $299 + awesome ad campaign?

I read somewhere that bigw were doing consoles only for $399. that's PRETTY GOOD. even now, the console + arkham asylum bundle is awsesome value.

But seriosuly, good to see the ps3 getting some sales finally. Competition is healthy in any market and more often than not gives us consumers the best results.

Most big businesses run a division at a loss in order to corner a market or cut into competitors sales. This is basic business 101. Sony sell games as well as consoles. They make the money back through first party games. Also they won't be losing much on the Slim either, the production process becomes cheaper and more streamlined the longer the technology is available (eg. DVD players). Simple.

Also if you read the article (which is from a year ago so it doesn't even apply to the slim) Stringer is quoted as saying, "We are already making more money with the games than we are losing with the hardware." That is how they break even.

Dear Sony,

Next time you release a console make it affordable from the start. They want to play games on a reasonably priced console. 99% of gamers don't care about installing Linux, memory card readers, buckloads of USB ports. People buy consoles for games. It's a shame it has taken you 3 years to work this out. But you're almost there so keep up the good work!

Come on this applies when entering a new market, think xbox and zune, not when you are the clear market leader with a profitable machine already. The ps3 has been a disaster in more ways than one for sony, losing market share and money being just a couple of them. I hate to think what would have happened if HD-DVD came out on top.

On another note, ill be getting one for MAG, that games looks freakin epic.

Wow, 1000% increase in 150,000 sold in Japan in only a few days? That is just amazing. Like many said already, it was very obvious that people wanted the PS3, but didn't want to pay such a high price. I wonder if its safe to assume that BC isn't a big necessity for PS3 owners now due to the significant increase of console sales.
