Australian sales charts, week ending 30/08/09

PALGN News | Sporty.
The top of the charts looks exactly like it has for the past five weeks now, with Wii Sports Resort reigning supreme over the rest of the mere mortal games. Except for Wii Fit in second place, of course, which is just waiting for the chance to seize back the top slot. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 has screamed back into the charts in a big way, taking possession of third place. The sports theme continues in fourth place with the debut of Grand Slam Tennis - on the Wii, of course. It wouldn't be the charts without Wii Play, which is of course present and accounted for at fifth.

Making it six straight at the top for the Wii is the ever-popular racer Mario Kart Wii. Other formats finally get a chance to shine in seventh place thanks to the PS3 edition of Codemaster's Ashes Cricket 2009, which will now undoubtedly disappear from the charts forever. The trusty Brain Training made a cameo this week in eighth place, making it a total of ten gazillion copies sold, while PC game The Sims 3 managed to gain a slot to close the week in eighth place. The PS3 version of Wolfenstein is in tenth place, with both the Xbox 360 and PC versions leaving the top ten after only one week.

The charts are updated weekly and are provided by those wonderful people at GfK.

Surely its about time we removed bundled titles from the tracking to see how games are selling rather then how periphals are selling? All the top five tell us is that people are buying controllers and picking up a discounted game with it. Alternativly why msoft and sony aren't joining the party with a controller bundle after all this time is strange. At $70+ for their controllers, it wouldn't hurt for a similar $90 or so package.

ontop of this prehaps we should finally actually get numbers of how much sold rather than listing of what sold more than the other.

tracking doesn't mean much without the numbers to go along with it (e.g. how much copies of Sim 3 sold etc)

This was happening for a while with the DS3. You could get a DS 3 and a game like Resistance or Motorstorm for $99. It seems to have stopped though. Also, I'm not sure if it was a Sony thing or a retailer thing.

Guys - if you can find us any charts that are produced without the inclusion of bundled games and with the actual number of units sold, I'll buy you a pink elephant. Or a good P!nk album. Or a unicorn's hoof. Or something else that doesn't exist icon_smile.gif

Perhaps a top 20 then so we can automatically disregard the top 5 unless there is significant change-up - and yes i know that this is also unlikely - by we i mean the trackers that be..............

Aside from Wii Play, nobody is buying those games just for the peripherals. Seriously, do you honestly think all those people buying, say, Wii Sports Resort are doing it just for the motionplus? Or that people want Wii Fit just to get a plastic board that you pretty much only use for Wii Fit anyway?

Ok cool, well ill just automatically disregard fanboy rants every week when the Australian Sales Charts get published here.

Maybe the reality, and the uncomfortable truth for you, is that these are simply the most popular games. It happened in the PS2 era, its happening in the Wii era. Australians in general buy "mainstream entertainment".
