POTW: Addicted to games?

PALGN Feature | No I was sick, honest!
So you like videogames huh? How much? Have you ever crossed that line and become, how do we put this, 'obsessed' with games, or maybe just a particular game?

Ever played so much that you've had to stop yourself continuing to 'play' in real-life? Maybe you were about to pocket that bobby pin on the ground, or drive somewhat recklessly down the street?

Have you ever chucked a sickie so you could stay home and play, or ever forgone some real-life social occasion, just so you could sink a few more hours into your latest fixation?

Please, you're with friends - exorcise your demons here in the forum and 'fess up - have you ever become 'obsessed' with a game?

*raises hand*

It's been a past time and entertainment medium, while I have spent time on it, much much time it's always been secondary to other more important things. Unless there's pride on the line, then it's on like Donkey Kong.

Back when I was young and of course could only buy like one game a year by saving up my $2 a week pocketmoney I played Zelda: Ocarina of Time almost once a week - literally for a year or 2.

Man i love that game

I remember having a bit of a cold, nothing to keep me home from work, rang in and "pulled the old sickie". The day was spent playing and in the end finishing MGS4. It was just too epic to put down.

There have been a number of games that have caused an obsession in me. The main culprits being Daggerfall, Planescape: Torment and Temple of Elemental Evil.

Is it really that hard to become obsessed with those 3 though?

My gaming habits are really strange.

There are some periods where I am obsessed with a game (or games) and I can't stop playing them. Like I could, if I had the time, play all day without noticing.

Or at other times I still play games but have no ambition to continue or unsure what game to play. I currently am at this stage. Dead Space was the last game I was utterly wrapped up in. I don't know why but I drastically swing from obsessed to not caring at all.

Secret of Mana on my SNES at the age of 10. All characters max level. All weapons with all characters at max level. All magic at max levels. I loved that game. icon_wink.gif

This is a tough one for me. Addicted, yes, but I can control it. If I have homework to do, I will do it and can go without gaming for weeks (especially for uni).

If I have nothing important to do, like homework, housework and going out, then yeah, I will play for hours and hours non-stop.

I have a motto, "Work hard now, Play even harder later".

I wouldn't call it obsessed, but I have certainly put many, many hours into certain games.... Sonic 2... FFX... Pokemon Red and Donkey Kong Land 3, More recently though, i haven't really gotten all that into any. Though to be fair, in the case of Sonic 2, Pokemon and DKL3, i really didn't have any other games to compete with them, having only the few measly dollars a week pocket money I'd been given.

I played Gears of War every single day (4+ hours) for 7 months straight. Im not sure if it was the game or the whole social aspect that kept me there for so long. Every night all the aussie Warzone regulars would hook up for some good ol **** talking and killing. I really miss those days. I miss Jim Dash too, he's a champion.

^I remember those days, they were great.

WoW was my biggest addiction. 6 months of it, 1600 hours.

Street Fighter Alpha 3, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Star Fox, Donkey Kong Country, Castlevania NES, Sonic R, Sonic the hedgehog, Tekken games, Persona 3&4, Drakengard, Dead or Alive Ultimate, Pokemon, Sonic Heroes, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Knuckles Chaotix, Guilty Gear. Just a few games I was really addicted to (many of which I still play)

That's pretty much my approach too. I've never prioritised anything over gaming that I can remember, especially not nights out or coffee with mates or marked uni tutorials/assignments. It's not that essential a part of my life, and I've gone for weeks and months without touching a game I was reasonably addicted to beforehand.

It helps that I get bored of games very quickly too, so they don't ever bog me down at all. I very much like to think that games complement my lifestyle, they don't dictate it.

Hi, My name is .... and I'm a game addict!

I try not to let it rule my life but I do know that sometimes it takes over all my thoughts. I'm at work but all I can think about is getting the next level in FFVIII. I have also played Commandos 1/2/3 in 12 hour sessions where I would play co op with one other and then sleep while two others played for 12 hours. (High school holidays rock!!!)

I also know that sometimes (not all the time) I let the games take the priority. When I have had a bad day or something just needs to explode I just load up L4D and get it out of my system.

geez pick any weekend and i would have avoided a social occasion to blow some virtual **** up

World of Warcraft took 1/6th of my time while I played it for two years and that's only because I didn't actually have any more time after working full time. Glad to say I don't play it anymore.

i dont treally play that often, only when there is some spare time. If there is nothing else to do I will sit down to a game, but the biggest problem for me is, which game? i spend more time choosing what to play than actually playing sometimes which is really sad.

Despite there are multiple games I found hard to put down etc, very few I would call obsessed: Old 16-bit Sonic's and the Shenmue titles would fit that word with me
