Wii reported to be the least-used current generation console

PALGN News | Nielsen report reveals the state of gaming in the USA.

In a recent report outlining findings of research conducted over the fourth quarter of 2008, entertainment research company Nielsen has revealed the state of play with respect to the use of videogame consoles.

An analysis of the sample of 17,000 households in the United States reveals that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are the most used consoles, while the Wii is the least used. 'Active use' is said to be measured by the amount of time the console is used during the measurement period.

Interestingly, the GameCube is more actively used among its smaller userbase than the Wii is within its own larger userbase. This may be a statistical indication that the Wii is primarily used by a more casual audience who play videogames on a less-consistent basis.

The report is an interesting reading, and one wonders whether the findings would be replicated if similar studies were conducted in other regions.

Yes, this is true in most cases, but the Wii is getting good games now. With HOTD and Mad World recently released and great games (according to most people), and Wii Motion Plus will probably be used for a lot of games. Then you have Monster Hunter and The Conduit being released soon. It looks like it will get more use this year.

i havent played a game solidly on my wii since zelda at launch week, might get into it again once some better games come out but i play my 360 a lot more than anything, somewhat my ps3 but not recently

I find it odd; given I play the 360 and Wii less then my DS, but I still play the wii and 360 roughly evenly.
Mind you it depends on the game too; ATM 360 is having Burnout and Fallout being thrashed; and Sonic BK and HotD on the Wii.

Nothing surprising considering the Wii would be owned by so many casual's who don't own a 360 or PS3. And a lot of gamers who do own one have no reason to play it.

Without even realising I haven't used my Wii in ages. Its so full of dust you can barely see it.

My wii is currently sitting on my deks beside my computer on the other side of the house from my bedroom were it's usualy set up.

It's been there since christmas when I moved it out to the lounge so my sister could play wii sports.

I just... haven't been arsed to move it back I supose, no reason really, it wouldn't get used.

Last time the report came out saying ps3 is the least used console, this time it's the wii, next time it will be xbox360? last time it said gamecube is used more than ps3, this time it used more than wii, yeah u can just write whatever

wii has many solid offers, plus HBC is a must have, and i don't see HBC is for casual gamers. If u have HBC then u wouldn't leave ur wii collecting dust. There are just too many things u can do with the wii, a gamer should know that. If used well, no console should sit there and collect dust, well unless u have too much dust at home and must buy a console to collect the dust.
