Modern Warfare 2 expected to be 'biggest selling video game of all time'

PALGN News | Activision has high hopes, apparently.
Infinity Ward's forthcoming first-person shooter, Modern Warfare 2, is expected to be the highest-selling game in history. At least, so says its publisher, Activision.

In an interview with UK site MCV, brand manager Simon Wells intimated that the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare sequel has been forecast to trump the sales of its successful forebearers.

Says Wells: "We want to propel this year's title to be the biggest selling video game of all time. That may raise some eyebrows, but step back and look at the franchise's trajectory through preceding launches, and this objective starts to look viable."

Wells goes on to state that Modern Warfare 2 could in fact be the "No. 1 entertainment property of the year". When one considers that its predecessor has reportedly sold over ten million units as of June of 2008, Activision's expectations may not be all that unreasonable.

In any case, the commercial success of Modern Warfare 2 can be judged when the title releases this November.

Well I'm glad to see that Activision are keeping their estimates modest.

Hope it's a bit less "one man army". The last one had moments where it was too painfully obvious that the game revolved entirely around you and was just WAITING for you to hit those trigger points... (the last American level where you have to jump out of that window, anyone? The enemies spawn in places they couldn't physically be hiding... icon_rolleyes.gif )

I'll mention that it got a big two-thumbs-up from a friend in the US 82nd Airborne, who played it (along with his squadmates) on a computer set up on base in Iraq. He said it did an amazing job capturing what it was like operating in Iraq... er... a nondescript middle eastern country.

It probably will. Seeing as the world seems to be full of people who are convinced COD4 is the greatest thing since electric collars for women, and sliced bread. Which amazes me seeing as I get more enjoyment playing with my bodily excrements.

The COD4 MP that everyone was ranting and raving about turned out to be a mediocre online experience, and I was back with UT3 and TF2 in days.

I liked CoD4, it was like playing a movie. I never did try the multiplayer though.

It will be the biggest selling video game of all time AT THIS TIME. And only maybe.

In the future, there are going to be way more games getting sold. It's just logical, the gaming community is expanding, and so there will be some epic game, possibly one that is addictive as hell for both adults and children to play, that will never be beaten

It is going to sell a lot guaranteed. MP's fun, still play it a bit.

COD4 is the best selling FPS this gen, its also the most popular online FPS. This will probably take over COD4 in sales. This game is going to be awesome.

I'm getting a little sick of FPS games, so they will need to do something special to entice me back. Particularly "realistic" shooters. I tend to find them somewhat offensive and borderline racist these days (I'm looking at you COD:WAW...).

Having said that I am curious to see how much they have managed to improve the graphics over the original which was a very sexy game.

Biggest selling is deabatable. I mean as much as I love COD4... expectaions are kinda high with me. COD: WaW was pretty disppointing. Co-op was nice and I certainly do hope that MW2 should have it.

COD 4 single player really was great. It was the first FPS to use 'next gen' graphics really well in a realistic setting (please correct me on this if I have missed a game).
COD 4 multiplayer was also great fun but often ended up as Grenades of Duty 4.
While shameless self promotion has it's place, I can't help but feel like Activision has been taken over by Peter Molyneux....

BAIT ALERT!

COD4 was awesome, you get to play each cutscene and no just watch ( ending was THE BEST!, how awesome was that gun sliding part )

And the multiplayer was great , it died down abit after cod:waw come out

I don't consider WaW part of the CoD series as it was not made by Infinity Ward and therefore doesn't count icon_razz.gif
BRING ON MW2!

I'm playing COD WOW online, but i have no hesitation in admitting COD4 modern warfare is the greatest online FPS on the market. Ill be all over COD5 no doubt.

Modern Warfare 2 selling 20 million copies? Feasible and possible. Modern Warfare 2 selling more than 40 million copies, passing both Super Mario Bros. and Wii Sports and really becoming the best selling video game of all time? Hm. I doubt it...
