POTW: Your nearest and dearest's attitude towards gaming

PALGN Feature | "You're not playing that again are you?!"
Here at PALGN we love videogames, that much should be apparent. And presumably so do you, that's why you're here right? In juggling busy lives and finding time to play games however, we hear various stories about people having to 'sneak' in some game time because their partner, family and/or friends aren't so keen on gaming.

So this week, we're curious about your loved ones' - whoever they might be - attitudes towards your gaming. Are you free to play to your heart's content, or do you have to limit yourself to playing when they're not around? Maybe they play too? Perhaps it's somewhere in between? However it works for you, let us know and vote now. Then again, maybe you just have a better suggestion for us than the term 'loved ones'!

Thanks to forum member skrob73 for the suggested poll.

I need the option "They play more than I do (because I work more)" icon_lol.gif

My fiancee doesn't mind my gaming habits. She doesn't even mind that I spend a fair bit of cash on it either ;)

I sometimes get her to play the odd game of Rock Band or whatever's new with me. Usually she prefers to play SingStar, Mario Kart or Smash Bros and the like when friends are over.

As far as I'm concerned if they weren't fully supportive they wouldn't be loved ones, of course that's probably why I'm still single icon_wink.gif

My partner's fine with it moderation. He hates it when all I talk about is gaming etc.

I agree with him, the past year has just been game focused and this year I am doing it abit more moderately, esp the buying side of things.

He used to game, but not so much now. He likes the PS2 and some PS1 games and also likes LBP.

It's great when you have a partner with the same hobbies. Our house is gaming central. There's games and controllers sprawled out in the loungeroom at any one time and our PC's are almost always running when we're both home. We spend our spare time alternating between rooms depending on what platform we're playing on. We probably should get out of the house more often, but it makes us happy...

Well, I spend more time with my gf than any other "loved one", but I still have been playing alot of video games, even when she's over.

Let me put it this way, my gf got me the video games I'm currently playing because she used to have a job at EB Games >_< and got them with staff discount, I'm pretty damn sure she loves video games as much as me

well, if it weren't for Mrs Palmer, it would be incredibly hard to hold the control-pads... icon_wink.gif

Accursed poll, it has reminded me that my mother beat the original NES Mario Bros before I did, such painful memories....

My WIfe is fine with me playing in moderation - ...
The problem is my new born is not - icon_biggrin.gif
It is kind of hard juggling my bub on one arm and managing a controller on the other.
However, thanks to the bub - a lot of late night gaming opportunities has suddenly become available icon_biggrin.gif

My gf has been practically enveloped in games ever since I bought her TF2 (even though she didn't want me to get it for her cause it wasn't the kind of thing she likes =p). But now whenever she has takes breaks from her uni work it's almost all she does. That, Peggle, and Ebay.

Some days she plays more than I do o_o;;

My girlfriend plays as many games as I do, if not more. She’s more into JRPG and tactical RPG’s and **** though. She was my co-op partner for all of Gears 1 and 2 and now days is on WoW more then me (With two level 80’s compared to my one level 75) She also really wants to get Army of Two to play through together.

My sisters aren’t that into gaming for the most part, although my eldest sister is pretty into Final Fantasy games and Oblivion etc, my middle sister loves Dead Rising and Stubs the Zombie, and my youngest sister (Still older then me, I’m the baby of the family) is into Wii Sport.

My dad really got into the old Mech Warrior games when they were coming out and my mum just plays Spider Solitar, although one day when I was sick home from school in like year 6 we played through all of Rampage World Tour in co-op together.

So yeah, pretty supportive.

My partner if fine with my gaming, so long as im playing with moderation. In the dark days of WoW for 6 hours a night, there were unhappy times at home, but now that im more moderate in my gaming habbits, its all good.

Still working on converting her into a gamer.

Well gaming is frowned upon in my household, but as long as its in moderation it's alright.

My girlfriend teases me jokingly about it calling me a nerd and such. But she's ok about it.
She has a ps2, wii and had a ds, but still i get teased!

While my parents have no issue with videogames, I gave up trying to get them to play when I persuaded my Mum, who is a huge 24 nut, to play the 24 game. She barged into rooms shooting at anything that moved. The terrorists got scared by this display, dropped to their knees and put their hands on their heads saying "don't shoot, we surrender", and she shot them all in the face icon_lol.gif. By the way, that was after she spent 10 minutes just running into a wall...

The rest of my family and most my friends have always been into games. My siblings play just as much as I do since we were playing Streets of Rage and Sonic 15 or so years ago together, and it's awesome playing LittleBigPlanet with my 4 year old niece now (it's funny when the game is loading, and she's pointing to all the buttons saying "this button makes Sackboy happy, this one makes him angry" etc). I'm teaching her well, and it's very cute watching her hold the controller in her little hands, she's pretty damn good at playing it, or when she gets into fits of laughter when my Sackboy slaps hers.

Yeah... My xbox is being used for peggle at the moment.

My much better half loves games almost as much as i do. Luckily, i might add, otherwise my Mario collection wouldn't be on prime display in the hutch (along with Astroboy and Console minfigs) where there should be fancy china and glassware. My stuff is more valuable anyway.

Also buying games isn't an issue as long as i allow for shoes, clothes, massages and flowers to be had. Happy Medium i guess.

How lucky are you all in here? icon_sad.gif`

I have to wait for my wife to sleep before I can turn on my 360. I then play till 1am (COD4 atm) and go to work looking like a zombie.

Sometimes I say I'm working in my computer room, but really I have 1 machine playing and the other logged into work. It's either I lie to her or I have to sit down and watch something like desperate housewives...which she calls time together.

I need a job in the gaming industry to satisfy my daily gaming hunger....anyone out there willing to help?

My bf thinks I play too much games and should go get a life, literally, lol.

He used to be a gamer but I guess work had soften him up from being hardcore RPG gamer to just casual now. But he is picking up Neverwinter Nights 2 and I get to see him playing for many hours, so its a good sign (and it brings back memory since we play co-op NWN 1)

I don't play that much in comparison to my friends at uni though. I can control myself during uni as I have a motto "Work hard now, play even hard later". And yeah, I do play hard during the holidays. Too much so I force myself to have another hobby, which is making stuff.

It's accepted in moderation for us, though recently, a lot of the time I can play as much as I like as I'm home alone 70% of the time and have nothing to do. Hopefully that will change soon though. My Mum and Dad are fine with it, and they've both been known to join me in playing the occasional game such as LittleBigPlanet or Peggle (they both enjoyed that). My Dad is more into it than my Mum though, as he used to be a bit of a gamer himself, and is the one who got me started. icon_smile.gif He bought himself a SNES, and soon enough I was the only one playing it, haha.

When I was living at home in my teens, I wasn't allowed to play a console game for more than a couple of hours at a time, same with the computer (unless Dad was working afternoon/night shifts). Dad always went off at me and told me to get out of the house and do something else. It wasn't until I paid for consoles and handhelds myself that I stopped getting restrictions, as well as part of the internet bill, and that was after I finished school.

My parter - very supportive when it comes to playing/collecting games. I've even sparked her interest in Gamecube, now she's mad for it! I thought I was spending too much on games, so I tried to slow down alittle, though I just found out when I fall asleep early she's on ebay buying more game!! oxox

7yr old son - loves games, though it's hard for me to play anything around him "Jen jen, did you see that, go get it, over there!!" ... "Yeah mate, I saw it. I know, just give me a sec" ... "Jen! did you see that guy? He was just over there *runs infront of tv and stands there pointing where the guy was* Just there!" ... "Mate, out of the way!! I saw him, mate please let me play, just shoosh .... shoosh ok? Ive seen the guy, just ... Just let me play *stressing out*" He's more then happy to play DS in his room. He's really into it all and knows not to touch the games collection, he gets SO excited when you show him something new

2yr old son - *pulls controllers out of ports and throws them around* ... *can hear Halo3 starting up after he goes to bed and cries because he wants to be awake too* ...*parents just want to relax!*

It's very hard to fit any sort of gaming in really with 2 kids and a large extended family (thanks to wifey having 7 siblings icon_neutral.gif) ... add working full time on top of that, wifey working the odd saturday, afternoons and evening all booked out with sports, activites, tafe etc

I would love just once to finish a game ... ANY game, I don't care which!!!

My bro plays a tiny bit of sports games and his getting into Vegas cause his friends like it, but his not a gamer. My best friend is a cod nut (you know ithe one's who thnk cod is the best thing ever and nothing else is good enough), my parents suck at games but only whine about my habits when I play excessively, the only game my father has actually played through is cod4 on easy but I had to help him lol, most of my other friends play casually so I'm the only person I know (not counting the internet) that are seriously into gaming except a few of my uncles that are a bit more into it. Well I don't got no gf so that's an n/a for me. Maybe I gave away to much about myself but oh, well

It's great in my house, both my kids are gamers (though mainly *uurrgh* sims with my eldest daughter) and my wife is very supportive of my collecting. Whenever she sees a gaming bargain she always picks it up for me...though i can only get her to play 4 psx titles (rayman, wild 9, skullmonkeys (i must have that again), and crash bandicoot).

But yeah they all play games in moderation which leaves me open to play anything anytime without having to kick anyone off a system. lol

Used to live with my dad (parents are split up if you Einsteins couldn't figure that out icon_biggrin.gif ) and he HATED gaming, everytime I got a new game (even if it was a freeware download) I got a speech as to why I should be saving my money and go outside and punt a football around just like the son he wanted :S

Two years down the track I live with my Mom (again) and since then I have gone absolutely nuts (22 consoles and counting) she has no problem at all with my gaming habits and is quite happy that I am passionate about my colection.

Im just so dissapointed that I can't share my passion in life with my ****head of a father icon_sad.gif
