POTW: The first new console out of the blocks

PALGN Feature | Who's it gonna be?
Having reviewed the week’s news articles - as we are wont to do - it seems that this particular piece, about Microsoft planning to rely on the 360 for longer than they did the original Xbox, struck a chord with PALGN forum members. We can’t remember which staff member wrote the article - but hats off to them - however, we digress…

Being the forums we know and love, discussion quickly changed focus and turned to speculation over which company might release its new console first. Would it be the new Xbox, the PlayStation 4 or perhaps the Wii 2 (the Xii)?

Kudos to forum member ‘ugh the boot’ for calling for a vote on the matter, to settle it once and for all. It sounded good to us, so please vote and tell us, which manufacturer will be the first to release its new console?

i reckon Bob will get the next gen console out first.

once he realises no one cares about him, he'll tackle the industry on his own and create The Bob.
He will hand make each one entirley on his own. Each one will take him 5 years. They will have the processing power of a SNES.

Microsoft all the way I say. They are the hit-and-miss idiots in business. Granted they have so much money it seems to kinda even out for them in the end. The 360 was rushed to the market to steal thunder from Sony and their customers have suffered for it. Imo that sort of tactic is criminal.

Basically Microsoft will do it again. It worked for them last time and it'll work again. Also the 360 imo is kinda the console with the least advancement/innovation despite the Wii being less powerful the control method and what it has done to the industry is quite significant and ground breaking so they would really be kicking their customers in the teeth if they decided to upgrade too early so my bet is it'll be Microsoft cuz Sony's machine is just a bit too young and expensive to be getting an upgrade anytime soon.

Also 360 was out almost a year before all the others meaning it's been on the market longer and more 360 owners would be ready for an upgrade.

The 360 is a piece of **** and just needs to be replaced by more stable hardware. The games need to be backwards compatiable in the next machine though. It would be criminal not to make the next Xbox backwards compatiable.

I really believe the next gen of consoles will be lead by Nintendo.

Nintendo is practically swimming in the financial success of both the Wii and the DS.

Having said that though, I don't think Nintendo will have the upperhand of the market next time around. It certainly would be more powerful, but i suspect that it wouldn't appeal to the large demographic the Wii and DS has.

However, my reason that Nintendo will come first is mostly based on the fact that the 360 is highly successful, and as Microsoft claims they're gonna milk it dry in the long run.
As for the PS3, well, everyone had high hopes for that console, and perhaps there are still people who do, but in my eyes, it is currently the "gamecube" of the current consoles. Sony will probably want to bring out something more successful next time, but will take some time before they get it right

If any console is the Gamecube of this gen, then it's the Wii imo. The Wii may have sold a lot better, but on the games front, it's a true successor to the Gamecube. icon_razz.gif

IMO, there WONT be a new console. I think that consoles and computers have become nearly intertwined with what theyre supposed to do, and that the "new console" will be more a pc / entertainment hub than xbox 360 or ps3 already is, and much more than a simple gaming device for disc based media.

Microsoft and Sony are at an advantage as their consoles may only need firmware upgrades to be fully operational as media and gaming devices. I doubt there will be another entire generation where consoles are strictly for playing games and we're seeing this now, apart from nintendo, sony and ms have moved into digital tv streaming and other once pc/tv dominated areas.

As the World shrinks (figuratively of course) with expanding infrastructure and faster, cheaper, bigger broadband plans, we may even see the end of single player games such as bioshock and fallout, and and even bigger rise in the types and content of mmo games, and probably player numbers per server high into the 100k or if not more. Imagine then a ww2 game with 50,000 soldiers beside u each controlled by a real individual somewhere on the planet with no lag.

Ive seen the future and it will be...

Never gunna happen.

With the push towards games as art, it's almost impossible to do using a purley multi player environment.
