POTW: The first new console out of the blocks

PALGN Feature | Who's it gonna be?
Having reviewed the week’s news articles - as we are wont to do - it seems that this particular piece, about Microsoft planning to rely on the 360 for longer than they did the original Xbox, struck a chord with PALGN forum members. We can’t remember which staff member wrote the article - but hats off to them - however, we digress…

Being the forums we know and love, discussion quickly changed focus and turned to speculation over which company might release its new console first. Would it be the new Xbox, the PlayStation 4 or perhaps the Wii 2 (the Xii)?

Kudos to forum member ‘ugh the boot’ for calling for a vote on the matter, to settle it once and for all. It sounded good to us, so please vote and tell us, which manufacturer will be the first to release its new console?

Are we talking a brand new system entirely, or revisions included as well?

I can easily see Nintendo releasing an updated ‘Wii’ before Sony and Microsoft do anything. Sony certainly wont budge from the PS3 for a long time since, and Microsoft I’m pretty sure also stated that they were in for a long generation.

With the recession and what-not it’s not a good time for a company to release brand new hardware. An updated Wii (eg: high def upscaling output, maybe larger storage, bundled with motion plus) would be less of a financial risk than an Xbox3 and PS4, so I could see Nintendo taking the plunge first.

I can see an updated Wii happening as well. I'm hanging out for one actually, something that outputs at HD resolutions anyway. 480p looks like boomer bile for a seasoned PC gamer.

Of course I imagine an updated Wii would nix GameCube backwards compatibility, because Nintendo is like that, so cue sadface icon_sad.gif

Couldn't Nintendo have a Wii output HDMI at a 1080p upscaled image? So while not 'true' 1080p resolution, everything would look a whole lot crisper and cleaner than just directly going from component cables to the display.

I have a DVD player like that. Upscales them to 1080p via HDMI.

I think that, given how late Sony was to the game this gen, they will be the first out of the gates in the next round.

I don't think that they should let Microsoft get to the hardcore market before them again if they want to repeat their success with the PS2.

Nintendo are doing so great I dont think they will rush out a new console anytime soon, even though the Wii isnt HD.
Honestly, Sony should just pull the plug on the PS3 and start again. 10 year plan lol

I'm expecting Nintendo to do what Sony did with the PS2 - Make it even smaller.

They probably can't do much with the horizontal footprint, but they can certainly make it thinner methinks.

Yeah, but the PS3 was a massive investment and with the recession it would be better to milk it for all they can rather than 'start over'. Starting over is theoretically a good idea, but from a buisiness perspective it could spell death.

Plus selling the PS3 as a BluRay player helps.

True, but Nintendo love hardware revisions, and if the DSi is anything to go by Nintendo are not afraid to release it even when the base platform is still selling well.

Maybe, but do they really need to? The Wii is already tiny and, as you said, it is already about as small as it can get horizontally. Would it be really worth chopping off 1cm for a re-release?

I think before it gets smaller Nintendo will release hardware revisions (extra storage, HDMI output, etc).

wait why should they pull the plug on it?
the hardware is capable of alot more, and saying that its not selling well enough, what would be good about starting again and put themselves into further into the red, if anything they will hold onto it alot longer till it starts making them more profits.
do you expect them to take a step back and go to dvd instead of the blu-ray (which is obviously the part making it cost so much)
other then that what is really wrong with the ps3?

I voted Microsoft, unless you are talking about a re-finement, in which case I'd say Wii. Basically the Wii is doing so well there is no need for Nintendo to move to the next-gen yet, Sony can't even if they wanted to, which leaves Microsoft as the most likely in my mind.

Sony should think about making the ps3 smaller....it's a heavy piece of **** that thing...but even if big it looks good.

Here's what I was thinking about the Wii Slim thing:

In my humble opinion it will be Microsoft who will release the next new console. However they are in the lead from hardware sales so they have no need to release a console, Sony on the other hand can't afford to give up on this PS3 but they need to show that they are still in the game by dropping hints of there next console. Sony will be the first to announce a new console while Microsoft will be the first next-gen console out. Nintendo has no need for a new console however a hd-wii will come soon, although it wont play blu-ray.

Funny that everyone thinks a new Wii will be on Nintendo's agenda, given that they don't really update their home consoles the same way they do portables.

I think Nintendo will have a new portable out before either of the 3 bring out a new console. But if I have to choose which will bring out a new home console then I'd say Microsoft, simply because they had something like a 1 year headstart on the competition.

I can't even vote.

For once it's actually almost impossible to predict. I have a feeling the current consoles may be around for a while.

Sony is possibly least likely to step up as they have yet to pay of PS3 so far. However they might be first to try and salvage their good name. Nintendo seem to be milking the Wii for all it's worth and seem content on keeping it going for at least another few years.

If I had to choose, Microsoft is probably on top, however even they have recently updated the current console. Even with that though, the NXE isn't going to extend the 360's life that much, and with Microsoft ahead of the game at the moment (I'm speaking in terms of high rated games not sales).

The current generation has been doing so well I'd be surprised if any company has even started really thinking about the next generation all that much.

I reckon sony will go first.
Nintendo and microsoft are selling WAY to well

-If it aren't broke, don't fix it

at a guess... microsoft...

sony is convinced that the ps3 will last 10 years...

nintendo don't care about performance so they have no reason to release a new console yet

so that leaves good ol M$... i'm sure the 360 has at least a couple more years in her... but it'll start to look old in a year or two i'm sure

Sony wont go first. I don't see why people think this. Releasing new hardware isn't going to magically increase sales. They don't need to do it and releasing a PS4 early will probably do far more harm than good.

Sony will focus far, far more on marketing and getting the PS3 into as many homes as possible for as long as possible.

THE NINTENDO PUU!!! :D

nah i think sony will bring out a new psp soon and xbox will get into the portable market so will sega

When PS2 sales start to wane and eventually cease, I see Sony bringing back PS2 backward compatibility to the PS3 via firmware upgrade.

Microsoft is very careful about mentioning any new hardware release to protect it's current install base (and Xbox Live). Also with the RROD issue on XBOX360, I dont think people will jump on to the new MS console as soon as it is released but rather wait until the new console has been fully tested and confirmed that there are no issues.

PSP will continue but I don’t see Microsoft and certainly not Sega investing into the handheld market. Nintendo own that corner, and the PSP is a great alternative for more high-end-hardware portable games.

Sega wont release a new console or handheld for a very long time, if ever. Considering they still cant get Sonic right, I say they should probably focus more on software.

It definitely won't be Sony. The PS3 may not be as huge of a success as the PS2, but I think Sony will stick to their guns just as they have with the PS2 (though losing momentum, it's still going nearly 9 years after its initial release, an impressive feat). The ten year plan has worked out nicely with the PS2, so I think Sony will just sit back and watch what happens while giving the console a few prods in the right direction (price cuts, marketing) over time.

Nintendo are easily my pick for first console release. The DS will have a successor before any next gen home console is released. Personally I don't see the Wii getting a revision, it's already tiny and uses a low amount of power. Nintendo could try and add HD functionality if they wanted, but they won't. Why? Because it would defeat a lot of the point behind their decision to make a console like the Wii in the first place. They wanted to make a cheap, all ages friendly console which wouldn't cause people to fret over buying an HD TV, and that's exactly what they did, to great effect.

As for MS, it could go either way. They got their next-gen console out the door first, so looking at previous patterns, that would usually mean that their next one would also be out first. However, MS have firmly stated that they intend to match the PS3's lifespan, and if Sony behave anything like I expect them to, then the 360 will be around for some time yet. Whether that means they will delay releasing the Xbox 720 until Sony are ready to go with the PS4 is hard to say.

Out of MS and Sony, I'm certain that MS will release one before, since they had a year's headstart. I reckon Sony will release a new console once the cost of production yet again decreases for the ps3.
But with Nintendo, there's no way of knowing what's going to happen. I think they'll release a Wii revision first before working full time on the next gen console.
HD functionality? I don't think that would happen, because the older games won't support it. But they'll add a HDMI port so the games would at least look better on big TV's. I'm certain that the Wii's replacer will be on HD, now that the 360 and ps3 have weathered and mapped the first steps. But Nintendo's next console would still be underpowered, due to their philosophy of sticking to tried and tested technology.

i reckon Bob will get the next gen console out first.

once he realises no one cares about him, he'll tackle the industry on his own and create The Bob.
