POTW: Are you a fanboy?

PALGN Feature | Computer says yes.
Of all the terms overused on the internet, few are invoked as quickly in heated arguments as 'fanboy'. Fanboys, according to urbandictionary.com, adore something to the point of letting "passion override social graces." This perhaps explains the general dislike of fanboys, but there is also something slightly endearing about the unbridled passion of a fanboy. To view the world through such eternally rose-tinted glasses must be a pleasure.

Therefore, we thought we'd ask the question: Are you a fanboy? Try and be honest, to yourself and the poll - it is anonymous after all.

I was mistaken as a Sony or Nintendo fangirl until I had a 360 just a few days ago, lol. (I do have all first generation Nintendo handheld console)

I do however, choose a console that would best suit my interest and my budget. I'm an RPG and a casual gamer on the console. Its not the "I like this company" that helps me make a decision on whether or not to buy a particular console.

You could say I'm a fangirl of a particular genre of gaming, lol.

Fan, yes.

Fanboy, no.

Fan = Love certain series.

Fanboy = Unquestioningly love certain series.

I can't reconcile myself with the idea of not thinking critically, so Fanboyism is an unlikely state for me.

^ to expand on that, i think Fanboy, in the truly negative connotation of the term, goes beyond mere unquestioning love for something, but to the exclusion of all else, and all other opinions.

i used to be very much a Nintendo fanboy back in primary/early-high-school, (NES/SNES era) as was almost everyone else at my school. had never played a megadrive, but i knew i hated it, and it was a pox on the gaming scene.
imagine my surprise to find that there are actually some very good games on the Megadrive.
(it's not really a case of hindsight regret either, since if i was into both consoles, i'd not have been able to afford games for both anyway - so it does kinda serve a useful purpose at times.)

to attach a meaningless stance to a very serious one, fanboyism is almost like homophobia, or xenophobia. you know you hate something, and you want to poke it with sharp sticks, but is there a rational reason? nope.

---
whether this is the meaning intended in the POTW, i don't think it is.
it obviously started as a term simply to describe a big fan of something.
i'm a Star Wars fanboy. i'm also a MGS fanboy, and a Valve and Blizzard and Terry Pratchett fanboy, and i'm sure a fanboy of many other brands/names/franchises.
but only in the "i'm a big fan, and collect useless mementos based on something" (or to use the poll's definition, getting it in the way of social grace) definition of the term.

I'm a borderline PC fanboy, but I'm willing to accept that there are a few rare games that play better on a console than on a PC.

Though I'd like to think of myself as fairly even across the board, I still do have this strong affinity to my PC. So yes, I'm a PC fanboy! As far as consoles are concerned, I stopped rooting for Sony a long time ago when I figured there wasn't much point. Now I'll go for whatever console will offer me the best value for money.

I'm not gonna vote, cause the results so far are exactly 50/50! That's an amazing result for me to look at it.

Absolutely not!

Unless it's Sega...

Wow, 50/50 as of this post (103-103).

Not a fanboy. Just one company that I dislike the arrogance of.

I used to be a Nintendo fanboy when I was little. I used to hate everything Sega and then Sony and even have drawings of mario killing sonic I did when I was in primary school haha. I'm not now though, I couldn't care less about systems/companies really.

I'm not but I dont like Wii. Does that make me an anti fanboy?

I'm not a fanboy, but apart from my N64, I've only owned Sony consoles. I still like the 360, Wii, and DS (all of which we have in our household), but I've always gone solely with Playstation consoles because their exclusive franchises appeal to me more.

I can, however, be accused of being a Naughty Dog and Insomniac fanboy.

I used to be a real dreamcast fanboy but over the last few years of collecting games i must say im split between the 2 main 16 bit consoles snes and megadrive...thats where gaming fun really seemed to peak then after that it seemed about making things look better

if you had polled me 5 years ago i'd have unequivocally said yes. i was pretty much biased towards nintendo because i believed they made the best games, and to be fair, there was a pretty long list of AAA titles to back me up
Ditto...
I play the field now.......

Im not a fan boy I just believe the Xbox 360 has a better catalouge of games.

I also own a Wii and think thats a steaming pile of ****, but I'm defintly not anti Nintendo, as I love and cherish my DS.

I'm whatever the opposite of fanboy is. I don't love my Wii, Gamecubes(well maybe I do), PS3, PS2, PC or DS, I just hate the 360. I guess I'm a hater. Make wireless built in and hard disks required and the 360 would almost be next gen. I think I just get ticked off when MS touts itself as next gen when it's the least next gen of the 3. See - I can't help the hate.

Even now I can feel it, buried somewhere deep inside, watching me, waiting... But you know what scares me the most? When I can't fight it anymore, when it takes over, when I totally lose control... I like it. (The Hulk, 2003)
