Australian sales charts, week ending 09/11/08

PALGN News | Gears 2 makes a big impression.
The string of brand new Xbox 360 number ones continued this week, with the debut of the blockbuster shooter Gears of War 2 taking top honours. We reckon it's a pretty good slice of gaming, to be honest. Taking second place is another new entry - and it's not any of this season's big blockbusters, but grappler WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009, on the PS2 of all things. Odd. Back in its usual number three slot is Wii Play, followed by the ever durable and consistent carting action of Mario Kart Wii at four. Sight Training for the DS continued its strong resurrection, up three places on last week to finish at five.

Wii Fit is a shell of its former self, unable to cope with the Christmas rush and wallowing in sixth place. Last week's number one, Fallout 3 on the Xbox 360, has plummeted, scraping into the charts in seventh place. The highly anticipated PS3 heavyweight, LittleBigPlanet, made its debut at a rather low eighth place, and could struggle to improve on that with even more big names hitting the charts next week. Brain Training is back yet again at nine, while the PS3 version of Fallout 3 slipped five places to close the charts at ten.

Shockingly, there was no trace of Rock Band in the all format top ten. Even more shockingly, the only appearance of the game in any of the charts was at five in the Xbox 360 chart. We're betting that Guitar Hero World Tour will have better luck next week.

The charts are updated weekly and are provided by those wonderful people at GfK.

LittleBigPlanet is number 8? Wow that sucks. It was beaten by a PS2 wrestling game. And of course Wii Fit an Wii Play are still dominating the charts. They have to win awards for the games that have spent the longest amount of time on the charts.

Why is Smack Down Verses Raw 2009 PS2 so high on the All Format list, but isn't even on the PS2 list?

Because the PS2 chart is for the week ending 15th of June for some reason.

Also, I'd go as far as to say LittleBigPlanet is actually rather high - its just not that appealing to the general public, especially if you haven't played it.

There was a rather large pile of Rock Band peripherals at my JB-HIFI that hasn't really moved since launch. Seems like Australians aren't that stupid to buy year old hardware after all, or willing to be treated like a backwater by EA.
Guitar Hero 4 will abolutely fill the charts next week.

Also interesting to see Mario Kart outselling LBP....

When I went to my local EBs (3 of them), they wereall sold out on LBP. So I am bit shocked to see LBP not in the top 3 of the chart. However I suspect there are couple of reasons, LBP is released on the 7th so it had only 2 days compare to some of the other titles. Also sony is bundling PS3 with LBP so maybe alot of people brought the PS3 bundle. (I think GFK only counts games that have been sold individually not as a bundle). Lastly sony couldn't produce enough copies of the hurry reproduction of the edited version of LBP so there was only limited stock... Combination of those factors made what was suppose to be a chart topping game lagging at the 8th place.

Next week prediction: WOW LK at #1, COD:WAW X360/PS3 somewhere in the top 5 with the rest of the nintendo-gangs.

I wouldn't say shocked. LBP is more of a boutique game then a stapple mega hit.

I'm still interested to see how more copies LBP sells world wide.

Looking at the sheer number of GH:WT packs going into shopping trolleys the last couple of days I dare say Rock Band is dead on arrival.

Serves EA right for treating us with utter contempt.

Look at every major catalogue and none of them mention RB at all but ALL have GH:WT plastered everywhere.

I bought Rock Band but it certainly wasn't a front row item at BigW. I even bought some songs to go with it. God I hate the wallet system of buying things.
