This Week's Releases - 20/10/08

PALGN Feature | Be prepared to cry.
Several of this year's most anticipated games are making their way onto store shelves this week. First up is Far Cry 2, a spiritual successor to the first-person shooter of the same name developed by Crytek four years ago. This time with Ubisoft at the helm, players are transported to Africa to hunt down a character known only as 'the Jackal'. Fans of original game can expect a massive playable world with night-and-day cycles and numerous weapons, vehicles and enemies littered throughout. Far Cry 2 is released this Thursday on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Players can purchase the standard game or pick up the Collector's Edition, which comes in a wooden box and includes a t-shirt, art book, collector's map and making-of DVD. For our hands-on impressions of Far Cry 2, head over to our preview.

The next shooter vying for our attention is Electronic Arts' Dead Space. As systems engineer Isaac Clark, players are sent aboard a mining ship that has stopped communicating with the outside world. Upon setting foot on the craft, you are confronted with a horrific situation caused by an unknown alien species. With no HUD and countless puzzles to solve, players have to rely on their own wits and resources to overcome the malevolent alien presence. Look out for Dead Space on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Peter Molyneux's Xbox 360 exclusive RPG Fable 2 also lands this week. Set 500 years after the original Fable, players are accompanying on their quest by a canine that acts as guide, protector and friend. With a new combat system, more relationship options, larger environments to explore and planned online co-op, Fable 2 is released in stores this Thursday.

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners have several other games to choose from, including Golden Axe: Beast Rider, Rockstar's Midnight Club: Los Angeles (click here for our latest preview) and MotoGP 08 (also on PC and PS2). Those with a PlayStation Portable aren't left out in the dark, with Midnight Club: LA Remix and Star Ocean: First Departure both out this week as well.

Wrapping up the plethora of games for the next seven days is Monopoly and G1 Jockey Wii 2008 on Nintendo Wii (head here to win a copy of the latter).

Note: PlayStation 3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet has been postponed until November.

So right now I'm definitely picking up Fable 2 (LE), Dead Space, Fallout 3 (LE) and Valkyria Chronicles and while I'm interested in Farcry 2 I fear it'll have to wait a LONG time with November's AAA line up.

Also huzzah to Star Ocean on PSP, I'll keep that on my radar for a later purchase. Oh and i'm totally getting 'Empty Wallets' next week, can't wait for it's sequel, 'Lost My Job'.

Man ... I would love to get all of those, but I've got to pace myself here! It's so easy to get caught up in all the hype and say eff it, I'm buying them all .... but realistically, I'm only going to have time to play one or two a month.

So if I get all these new releases at launch, then I would have paid full price for games that are going to sit on my shelf waiting for me to play. And by the time I eventually get to them, they will probably be worth a lot less.

I'm really going to need some will power over the next few weeks!
