eGames 08: The PALGN Podcast, Episode 44

PALGN Feature | Random Walk, Peter Barlow on eGames, and Competitions.
This week, minus our regular Jeremy, Daniel and Tristan hold the fort and take a random walk to topics including development cycles, and the broadening of the industry. We also chat to Peter Barlow, organiser of the upcoming eGames expo in Melbourne about what to expect this year, and just what goes on behind the scenes in maintaining such a diverse show. Evan also takes us down memory lane in Know Your Roots, and discusses Portal (no, that's not the Portal with companion cubes and insane AI - it's something else entirely).

We're also running a competition every week from this week through to the launch of eGames, so have a listen for your chance to win a double pass for a full day at the expo. Instructions on how to win are in the podcast, so tune in and show up! All up, this week's episode clocks in at 35 minutes.

Backing music in Know your Roots used from the Amiga version of Portal. This week's outro remix is Tetris 'McVaffeQuasi Ultimix' by McVaffe and Quasikaotic and distributed by OverClocked ReMix (www.ocremix.org). For the full bitrate version, why not head over to OverClocked ReMix and download it?

Remember, if you don't want to miss any of our weekly podcasts, make sure to subscribe via your favourite podcasting service, whether it be Apple iTunes, Creative ZenCast, or a GPL alternative such as Juice.

Just got it and will listen to it tomorrow at work...I've been loving the new format with the seperate segments and what not..its great.
Keep up the good work and thanx for not being like other podcasts where they have 2/3 of the show bull$#!tting and talking over each other and 1/3 about actual games.
Its a very clear, structured sounding podcast and you's should all be damned proud of the effort put into it.

The worst part is I have caught up with the podcasts and now have to wait to listen...I started from the first 1 and worked my way through to see how an opinion panned out, to get an idea of who much you guys actually know to see if it was worth listening to further podcasts. Is the best podcasting show I've listened to so far out of about 7.
Cheers chaps and keep up the fantastic work.

Looks like I'll be listening to the podcast for the next month as I'm in need of a 3 day double pass to Egames for me and my dad.

Stupid question probably...but why email your email when your email should be visible in any email to be emailed? Unless of course you're looking for individuals with 2 email accounts in which emailing an email addy would be entirely possible that is. icon_razz.gif

You know, that occurred to me the very moment I recorded it... still, I guess it can't actually hurt. icon_razz.gif

great ep

i am very interested in that portal game so will have to track it down and play it..

to tristins (i think) comment on older gen gamers wanting people to be more interested in games and then whinging that they now are...well i must admit i am 1 of those people LOL. for years i wanted people to be more interested in games and as soon as they did it seemed to take away a lot from it...i think in the sense that it was the domain and, i guess, refuge of the nerd and these primates that came into it when the psx came out kinda put a bad image on gamers..as rude arrogant and over the top childish and brute-ish. or i guess to put more perspective on it a cross between the jocks of the Alpha Beta fraternity from revenge of the nerds and the group of trouble makers from the first harold and kumar movie (replacing their use of the word extreme for the word hardcore).

Nice podcast boys, though it will be good to have Jeremy back next week to get some more discussion going. About winging over casuals saturating the market, I know I am guilty over that. The main reason being that ever since Nintendo (my former favourite developer) started to make casual games, I have found that the amount and quality of their 'hardcore' games has declined. It also pisses me off to see people pay good money and spend their valuable time playing crappy shovelware.

^I think you'll find that Nintendo's current problem is less to do with casual titles and more to do with a lack of innovation in their bigger games - unless you count waggle control. Besides Mario Galaxy, most of their titles have been pretty close - and far too close in my opinion - to previous iterations. Sure there are a lot of crappy casual titles but there's more than enough good ones to make up for it.
