PotW results presume particular pullouts

PALGN News | Which company is Nostradamus' weakest link?
A record-setting turnout for the Poll of the Week itself, PALGN visitors were evidently passionate and vocal about their industry politics when last Sunday's PotW went live.

Out of the 417 participants, almost 50 per cent see Microsoft as the predominantly unsure hardware player within the videogame industry. Trailing not too far behind in the unpredictable stakes is Sony, with 40 per cent of the unfortunate forecast. Meanwhile, the House that Marioâ„¢ built is sitting pretty, with Nintendo garnering a comparatively measly 11 per cent of the overall pessimistic consensus.

Well, that's surprising, to me at least. Though I'd say the results seem to match the question "Who would you prefer to see pull out" more than anything.

I know there's lots of MS haters out there, but I just don't see them going anywhere. It's not just about the games for them - it's almost like a lounge room media pc. Add to that the success of XNA at attracting developers, and MS is finally finding that technical people will get past it's monopoly status if it treats them right.

If anyone's gonna drop out first it'll be Microsoft for sure. I dont see Sony doing it anytime soon, nor do I see Nintendo.

less hate more looking at the past...

I mean, look at last gen - even if sony isn't doing anywhere even in the same league this time around, it's hard to believe them dropping out...

and as for the whole 'but look at sega' argument, they were basically ALWAYS behind nintendo in console sales, in every single gen, so it's not really a fair comparison...

Nintendo won't ever go anyway unless they have apocalyptically bad software and system sales multiple generations in a row. The Wii is, in many places around the world, their fastest selling system ever. While the GCN and N64 underperformed, they still sold plenty, especially in Japan.

When you toss in the sales of their key franchises you know they are here for the long run.

In my opinion they are the most deserving too. Out of Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, they've been in the console gaming industry for both software and hardware for much longer than the other two, and they can still print money.

That alone deserves some degree of respect.

This poll was interesting pure because it's so unlikely any of the 3 will be pulling out. Realistically the 3 major console developers are going no where at least not till two generations time.
I also think the results could be skewed purely from a choice of which console you think is best.
Expect to see MS Sony and Nintendo around for at least another 10-15years.

I don't see any of them pulling out right now.

MS won't pull out as they are actually making money on it now, and get money for nothing for the licensing.

Nintendo would pull out, if the Wii was going bad, but we all know how well that is going, so they won't pull out.

Sony won't pull out right now because PS3 sales are starting to pick up without them having to reduce the cost of the console. If that trend continues (or a price reduction to coincide with lower manufacturing costs) then Sony should be in a good position soon(ish).

So Sony would be the most likely, from what i understand, but far from actually contemplating pulling out.

Sony's stock price is the lowest it's been in 5-10 years and they've just had to recalled 440000 Vaio notebooks, they're also heavily in debt. Both Microsoft and Nintendo are greatly in the green and are making money off their consoles. Microsoft have also cut the price of the Xbox 360 while PS3s still cost "$1 million".

So yeah, this turned into which company do you want to pull out poll.

this poll 3 years ago would have showed nintendo as 99% ready to go.

Just be glad we can even have this poll, i remember when Nintendo tried to buy every game license past present and future in about 1988, that was a worrying time my friends.........

wow that is the exact opposite to what i would have thought. very odd

I'd say Microsoft would be the least likely to pull out, Sony and Microsoft have a diverse consumer products market, so if the Playstation 3 or the Xbox 360 did abysmally then they could still fall back on the products which are still very profitable.
Nintendo on the other hand doesn't have that luxury, if their console flops then it affects the whole company as well as it's ability to fund another generation of consoles.

The reason I'd pitch Microsoft as being above Sony is that Sony as a company is much more unstable than Microsoft. Sony markets itself very hard to gain a small percentage of market share in a dozen different industries and with recent far more competitive technologies eating into their profits of products such as the Walkman. Microsoft on the other hand has a much more stable business model, they hold almost the whole market share in terms of consumer operating systems as well as a large portion of market share in the enterprise software industries. These are products which are far cheaper to produce (Producing a million copies of Vista after development is cheaper than producing half a million television sets), so even with poorer performing operating systems Microsoft does not face the losses that Sony does.

It puts Microsoft in a far better position to deal with sudden changes in supply, if XP stopped selling altogether Microsoft can still push on in projects for other industries with far less losses than if Sony lost out in the television manufacturing industry.
