The PALGN Podcast, Episode 42

PALGN Feature | The Blitz, Steve Fawkner on Puzzle Quest Galactrix, and NetDevil on Jumpgate Evolution.
This week on the PALGN Podcast, we keep a local focus while going global. First, we catch up with local superstar designer Steve Fawkner, CEO of Infinite Interactive, to discuss Puzzle Quest, Puzzle Quest Galactrix, and Neopets Puzzle Adventure. Among other things, we chat about his experiences designing Puzzle Quest, what to look forward to within Puzzle Quest Galactrix, and how the relationship with Nickelodeon and Neopets came about.

Looking a bit further abroad, we also cross live to the floor at PAX 2008 to have a chat with Scott Brown, co-founder of NetDevil, to discuss Jumpgate Evolution and see what tidbits we can find out about the upcoming Lego Universe game. Things discussed include where an action-focused MMO space combat sim fits in today's market, the latest features shown at PAX, and the likelihood of an Australian server.

And, in this week's feature segment, Jeremy, Tristan, and Evan hit the Blitz to discuss our highest viewed news items over the last four weeks. Not surprisingly, Sony features very heavily, what with the PSP 3000, a wireless keypad, the new 80 gigabyte PlayStation 3, and the lack of a 160 gigabyte PlayStation 3 for Australia and New Zealand.

This week's outro remix is Bionic Commando 'BionicBPM' by d0d0 and distributed by OverClocked ReMix (www.ocremix.org). For the full bitrate version, why not download it?

I was rather the same with the PSP, thinking huzzah about titles such as the compilation Suikoden port, SO First Departure and others only to have some stick in Japan, some stick to USA and overall product here being nowhere near what I was going to be getting it for. Then came the revisions and random fluctuations in prices with random drawbacks of batteries, screwed pixels or flying umds of death where it's still simply not worth it despite the ease of importing and the price differentiation. This current 3000 model (of which I was actually reminded of that Beyond 2000 show for some reason) does complete didly squat to even fuel the "meh" desire already towards the PSP or alter it in any shape, because it's still really import or bust for many people as far as software goes.

edit: argh and I just remembered, I called public ridicule & violence on individuals taking Eb's PS3 offer first! I CALL SHENANIGANS! icon_razz.gif

My biggest issue with the PSP is that I already have a decent MP3 player, a good PMP, and an enjoyable gaming system - the DS. Without enough killer apps, the PSP's value proposition just isn't there for me. the Skype phone idea is pretty cool, but I'd rather buy an iPhone or get a new mobile ...

Yeah, but even as a gaming console or media centre it's sub par, I mean I don't have a portable mp3 player, couldn't really care if the PSP could do it, the PMP is only slightly decent at a smaller screen size only because of then weight ratios with the competition. As you say also, they have a decent idea but then it'd also have to combat with the iPhone or an actual mobile, would also be a bit stupid socially to see one guy talking on a phone and the other talking on his PSP where it just wouldn't catch on outside of home / individual scenarios.
