The PALGN Podcast, Episode 41

PALGN Feature | We turn one, look back on the year that was, and chat with Marcus Westbury.
This week on the PALGN Podcast, you say it's your birthday — well, it's our birthday too, yeah. That’s right, over the course of the last 52 weeks, or 365 days, we’ve managed to turn out 41 podcasts — not bad for something that started out as a fortnightly experiment.

To celebrate, the Podcast regulars — Jeremy, Tristan, Daniel and Evan — get together to go over a year of awkward silences, talking over each other, and of usually having a terrific time. We take you behind the scenes of the PALGN Podcast, and let you in on a few secrets for the future.

More importantly, we talk to Marcus Westbury, creator of ABC TV’s Not Quite Art about videogames, the art world, government funding, and his new season of Not Quite Art. It’s a great interview, and we hope you tune in. Also, we jump back into Know Your Roots with a look at a classic retro title, Alter Ego. Interested in playing along while listening? Have a go at The Black Forge.

This week's outro remix is Super Mario Bros. '8-bit Eighties' by Starla and distributed by OverClocked ReMix (www.ocremix.org). For the full bitrate version, why not head over to OverClocked ReMix and download it? Also featured in this week’s episode are ‘Once in a Lifetime’ by Talking Heads and ‘Rush’ by Big Audio Dynamite II.

Remember, if you don't want to miss any of our weekly podcasts, make sure to subscribe via your favourite podcasting service, whether it be Apple iTunes, Creative ZenCast, or a GPL alternative such as Juice.

What no singing happy birthday to the podcast? Where was your festive spirit! The outtro should have been the 4 of you singing happy birthday dear podcast and then an e-cake... because everyone loves cake even those who don't love cake even if the cake is a lie! Plus it would have matched with the whole talk over each other theme you guys had going there.

I do have a suggestion though since you all asked so nicely for input and Evan will know what I'm on about if I make less sense than usual. I'm a fan of the Vamp: Bloodlines radio adverts and feel that such a section as a topic break, instead of yet even more music, might give a bit of, well variety to the segments. I actually thought about it after the last podcast with the interview ending with a typical political "vote for me!" which could have segmented into the break for a short political witty advert before then shifting to the new segment for added hilarity.

Of course, I also tend to be an idiot sometimes.... and in true festive spirits, and the podcast smells like one too, hip hip!

Our jokes are bad enough — I think our singing would have pushed our listeners over the edge. icon_razz.gif

Thanks for the suggestion. I think the primary barrier to that sort of thing at the moment is time, as the time commitment to producing the podcast as it is is already quite high. But anyway, Evan, feel free to contradict me here if you want. icon_razz.gif

No, that's definitely the major issue. We're going forward with more 'PALGN Short Cuts' segments (which should be a regular feature from here on in), the first two of which are 'Game Ed 101' and 'Know Your Roots', but they're probably longer than what you're talking about - we're aiming for regularly featured concise, interesting blocks of around 5-8 minutes long, whereas I think what you're suggesting are 15-30 second long talking bumpers.

However, the suggestion is a good one, and it's kicked off some ideas that I'll play with.

Incidentally, we've got some really good interviews coming up. The next one (which is mentioned at the end of the podcast) is a really good one, but I won't spoil it for those who haven't listened yet. Beyond that, we've got roughly the next three weeks already organised, and believe me, they're going to be worth it. icon_smile.gif

Don't forget, if you know anyone who's interested in hearing stuff direct from the horse's mouth (so to speak) about Australian and international gaming, tell them to check out the podcast. We've got a good lineup, and we're planning on maintaining the pipeline.

Hi Guys

Happy Birthday!

I've been listening since the first one and have enjoyed the twists and turns that has been the PALGN podcasts.....so many memories.

I like the slickness of the new "magazine" format, but I think you can still do the odd "one off" here and there, like the Zelda or Castlevania specials where the whole episode is devoted to the one series or issue that warrants a longer discussion.

The best moments have been when one or all of you are particularly "passionate" about a particular topic or series as it shows in the lively debate that usually follows : )

I for one don't mind a longer podcast as I listen at work. So I wouldn't be against an hour long episode every now and then. Daniel has done a great job of "tarting up" the podcast, so to speak, so I'm sure he could bring this to bear on a longer discussion that sometimes need a bit of editing or breaking up.

Anyhoo, keep up the good work

Finally got around to listening, so Happy Birthday guys! I would love to hear more ranting, raving and long winded discussions, just so long as they are about games and issues that I give a dam about. Like how Jeremy (I think) said, I am more than happy to hear/participate in a long discussion about Zelda/Donkey Kong series and heaps of stuff etc., but if it's about something that I don't care about then I wouldn't listen.
