LittleBigPlanet user-created content to be region-specific

PALGN News | PAL gamers unable to trade creations with those across the seas.
According to reports emanating from CVG, the LittleBigPlanet presentation at Leipzig revealed that levels created with the game's expansive toolset will be available only in the region in which they are made.

Sony's Pete Smith, who works closely with the title's developer, Media Molecule, explained that this restriction will be due to different regions being allocated their own dedicated server to host user-generated conent.

"We've got regional servers," said Smith. "But we can move levels around on servers whenever we want. But you won't have access to the Japanese servers."

This does suggest that while PAL gamers will not be able to browse the full extent of creations hosted on North American or Japanese servers, Sony will be able to make certain content available across servers.

That's a real shame. They should rename it LittleBigContinent.

WHAT?

Technical difficulties my arse.

They could do this if they wanted. All they have to do is to create a global server with a database listing (but not storing) all the entries on the region specific servers, and if someone wants to download them, then connect them to that regional server.

Meh its ok, no doubt there are some talented aussies with lots of time on their hands. As long as the servers are as good as the Resistance ones then I am happy enough ^^

This is absolute bullplop. One of the main reasons I wanted to play this game is for the user generated content. Sure the game on it's own it awesome enough to warrent a day 1 purchase but through in the content the japanese people will make and it would have been even more awesome.

Isn't the user generated content, like most games, generated using in-game assets and coding? As in, everything you can create in LBP is made using editors and content built into the game.

If so, there is really no technical hurdle, as user content would be the same regardless of which region you are in.

Seems a bit silly to me.

I've read on some other sites that what the developers said about this was pretty confusing and there was no definite answers on this issue yet. Hopefully there'll be a few more Q&A sessions about this to clear it up.

"We've got regional servers,"
...?

From the sounds of things they're going to try and have the servers talk to each other so I don't really know if this is even an issue.

Hi all, as many of you may have heard already in an interview at Leipzig the senior producer for LittleBigPlanet announced that the game is region locked. This is in fact not the case, and all shared levels in the game will be available worldwide. The confusion arose out of regional differences in how moderation will work as there are different legal rules each region have to play by, and at one point this looked like it may require the game to be independent in each region - however this has been worked around and there will only be one region for the game.... a LittleBigRegion.

Apologies for any confusion over this issue, however I'm pretty sure you're happy with the result.
