Rare explains why we are yet to see Goldeneye on current-gen consoles

PALGN News | What does the future hold for the title?
Whether you had a Nintendo 64 or not, one of the most popular games of the late 90s was Rare's GoldenEye 007. Finally a game worthy of the Bond name had arrived and it had people everywhere clamouring for a taste of its FPS wares.

Earlier this year rumours began swirling that the title was to make its way onto the current-gen consoles with word that an Xbox Live Arcade version was in the words. With numerous screenshots and a gameplay video surfacing on the internet, gamers were all but assured that their dream had come true.

But with the title almost nearing completion, Rare has been forced to pull the plug on the title as the game sits in development hell due to licensing issues.

In an interview with VideoGamer.com, Rare's Senior Software Engineer Nick Burton explains why this project may be another chapter in the annuls of gaming vapourware.

Burton acknowledged the development difficulties of GoldenEye for XBLA and Nintendo's Virtual Console stating that "it's incredibly hard to solve because there's so many licence holders involved. You've got the guys that own the license to the gaming rights now, the guys that have the licence to Bond as an IP, and there are umpteen licensees." Burton further explained that because of this licensing debacle Rare doesn't have control over the project any more and that it's in the hands of license holders, leaving the title "locked in legal limbo".

As for the title ever seeing the light of day, Burton is resigned to the fact that "the ball's not in anybody at Rare's court really. It's squarely in the license holders' courts. It's a shame. It's kind of locked in this no man's land. There's nothing on Live Arcade, there's nothing on Wii".

His final words on the topic: "It's probably going to go down in the annals of gaming history as one of the big mysteries."

Yeah I saw this yesterday. Goldeneye was a unique title, it very unusual for a game based on a movie, yet managed to go down as probably the best console FPS of all time.

It is a shame that outside dusting off your 64 or grabbing a ROM that we may never see this game again.

It seems absurd that the licence holder would just sit on it. It's a licence to print money!!!

The problem is who gets to pick that money up from the printer icon_sad.gif

Id say rename it and re brand it all. Change the content ever so slightly to allow it to be released with out the liscence holders being able to do anything about it.

It wont be bond but at least we'll be able to play the damn thing.

I'd say just release Perfect Dark instead.

And that seems a real possibility according to General Manager of Microsoft Game Studios, Phil Spencer: "We do have the rights of the complete Rare catalogue (except GoldenEye 007). We’re studying all the possibilities to bring classic games from the past like Killer Instinct and Perfect Dark."

I personally preferred PD's multiplayer over Goldeneye's, and i enjoyed each game's single player mode about the same.

Sounds like a pain in the ass...

Goldeneye 007 is the only FPS I've ever liked. I am not a FPS player by any stretch of the imagination, but that game brings back some great memories for me.

Maybe it will be sorted out and released on VC by the time Nintendo gets the storage solution figured out (so, next century).

Yeah, we could change it around a bit and release it as...

First they have to sweet-talk Nintendo letting them publish.

Yeah man, same here. Golden Eye was the only FPS I liked also. I played abit of Quake during LAN battles during high school, but Golden Eye was definitely the best one.

I would like to see another version of Killer Instinct, that game was so cool. It would be nice to see a Wii version of Killer Instinct. Like I mean, it was on SNES, GB and N64 afterall.

You've gotta question why they haven't done this yet? Perfect Dark's multiplayer pretty much eclipsed Goldeneye in every way, more levels, cooler weapons, bots etc.

Where are those licensers? Why don't they want money? Or at least for the license to be worth more?!

The inhumanity of this situation appals me. The game is sitting there, finished, indistributable. It's like taking candy from a baby, then hanging it just above it's head. icon_sad.gif

Who's up for a raid to Rare HQ so we can go steal they game and leak it.
I don't think they'll resist much.

^ Just you try and get past the laptop guns at reception.

If the ball was never in Rare's court in the first place, then why in the blue hell would they actually commit man power and time into creating that much of it?

Smells like teen bullsh*t to me paco!

They possibly didn't know there was going to be a problem, they could have thought "sweet, we'll make the game and get our publisher to pay whoever needs paying" but then got kicked in the jewels once they realised it wasn't that simple.

If they are going to do it, chances are they are going to save it and release it just in the lead up to Perfect Dark 2's release as part of the hype machine and etc.
