PotW ponders who The Dark Knight (game developer) could be

PALGN Feature | Let's put a smile on that (potential player's) face.
It's both a blessing and a curse. With the theatrical release of The Dark Knight, it's undoubtedly fortunate the lovingly crafted cinematic production and performances have not been sullied by an obligatory half-handed game cash-in.

Then again, with the amount of awe-inspiring setpieces and characterisations -- most notably mastered by the late Heath Ledger -- our hopes for a game studio to finally step up and offer a creation of close-to-equal worth were naively never met.

Indeed, there's nary a Dark Knight tie-in game yet to be officially announced -- and there's every chance there never will be.

Sure, there's a LEGO Batman title on its way, but some of us grew tired of Traveller's Tales' formula long before LEGO Indiana Jones. And while there's a mobile phone Dark Knight tie-in game, it definitely leaves a lot to be desired in matching the nitty gritty feel of Christopher Nolan's second Batman piece on a 176 pixels wide and 204 pixels tall screen. Meanwhile, the less said about the online, flash-based Gotham City Street Chase, the better.

If there was a well and proper Dark Knight game though, one can only begin to ponder who'll take the development helm. From past, present, defunct and rumoured future developers of a currently hypothetical Batman title, who would you want to be in the Dark Knight's game developer's chair?

Cast your beliefs in a makeshift game-developing Harvey Dent here, while a running tab on the results -- assumingly courtesy of an intrusive feed via Wayne Enterprises -- can be viewed here. It's all part of the (Poll of the Week) plan.

Ubisoft. Assassin's Creed could be turned into an amazing Batman game with only a few modifications.

yeah if they can make a snow boarding game out of it. It must be a very verstaile engine.

Bethesda. Hey their environments might be samey looking but they know how to make a huge sprawling world that looks beautiful, which I reckon would be great for a batman game.

Then what's stopping you? Just make sure you pick a comfy cinema and are well rested. The movie clocks in at around 3 hours long and I missed spoken bits here and there due to being tired after work.

The question is what type of game we'd like to see The Dark Knight based on. I have found that my most enjoyable experiences with Batman titles were Batman Forever on the Mega Drive / SNES, which was sort of like Final Fight beat 'em up action crossed with motion captured / special move centred Mortal Kombat gameplay mechanics; and the awesome Adventures of Batman & Robin on the Mega Drive which was sheer run n' gun bliss and faithfully recreated the cartoon series of the same name.

I just dont know what genre could give people a fresh and exciting playthrough. Perhaps a free roaming perspective in the form of the successful Spiderman 2? That could be fun to roam Gotham's nightscape and foil crimes as they happen..

Having loved both Lego Star Wars (especially) and Lego Indiana Jones, I will still enjoy Lego Batman.

Irrational / Looking glass. I mean tell me they weren't the best developers ever (thief series, system shock 2)

Valve. Just... Valve. Just because I love them :P

Nah, if I had to really pick one, then I'd probably go for Ubisoft. As matrix-cat said:

what's stopping me finding someone to go with and friends not replying to my messages. Who goes to the movies by themselves? not me.

Why the hell not? You're not proving you're a social puppy by sitting silently in a darkened theater for up to three hours.

if it's a film i want to see, and no one else is interested/available, me.

hell, i've had an entire screen to myself on more than one occasion.

I've only ever been to watch a movie on my own just the one time. It was a really odd experience icon_dumb.gif I missed the traditional discussion about the film on the drive home.

Even though that time felt a bit weird, it won't stop me from doing it again should the need arise. If I want to watch something, I won't let anything stop me. Other than rising ticket prices of course.

I don't care who does the game, however if the lego version of batman ends up being better that would be a bit sad imo. Ohwell the movie hype far surpasses the game hype for me :]

going to see a movie by myself would make me feel very uncomfortable depending on how many people are in the theater of course. Besides going the the cinemas should be a social experience. I have my fingers crossed that i'll see it this weekend.
