E3 2008: Knights of the Old Republic MMO on the way

PALGN News | BioWare get massive.
In an interview with portfolio.com at E3, EA's chief executive John Riccitiello has confirmed that a Knights of the Old Republic MMO is on the way.

After mentioning EA's upcoming Warhammer MMO, Riccitiello goes on to state that "...the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it." When asked directly if he meant a KOTOR MMO, Riccitiello simply says "yes".

Beyond that, we know nothing else but will, of course, keep our noses pressed to the pavement for any details we can discover. In the meantime, ladies and gentlemen, sharpen your lightsabres ...

I was a huge fan of KOTOR (favourite game on Xbox) but for some reason this just doesn't excite me.

I think with Bioware at the helm, and the lessons learnt from Galaxies, this one should turn out just right. Here's hoping, at least.

I've played it already. It's called Galaxies. ;)

This might be alright though.

Man, I missed the KOTOR boat. I tried playing it in the post-Mass Effect world but it was too painful.

Hopefully, this will see me catch up on what I've missed out on.

No no no no. Simply no! MMO for KOTR is a rubbish idea. everyone knows the only reason people want to make MMOs (after WOW anyway) is that they want to cash in big time.

Unless the game is more of a SP game with some online stuff mixed in that doesn't make it exactly a crappy MMORPG, than maybe this will work.

star wars knights of the old republic would proabably be my favourite game of the last generation. The game was perfect, the twist at the end was amazing and the option to follow your destiny in two directions rocked. The best part was seeing plot elements and environment objects that worked its way into the series of movies.

im a bit pesimistic about a mmo for the series but i am interested as to how they will make it pan out. I hope there are a number of planets that can be traversed, that would be tha bomb

Here's to having Jedi Sentinels with force lightning tanking while the Sith Marauder sits in the back with Battle Meditation before a timer goes off and the two swap places. of course they'd be doing the same quests, there'd be minimal division between light side and dark side, although light will have more work done and Wookies will still only use 10% of all equipment.

Yeah not too hopeful that this will do well.

Having the benefit of playing WoW AND KoTOR, I can't help but be excited. I don't think making an MMO is an easy cash-in, MMO's aren't exactly cheap to make and it's not going to be easy to break WoW's stranglehold on the genre...
I don't think that many people were too excited about a Warcraft MMO 4 years ago, but that worked brilliantly. Anybody who's played it, gets it.
The Bioware pedigree should guarantee quality, I'd be hugely excited if it was a Mass Effect MMO too.
