Only casual games and blockbusters viable, claims BioShock dev

PALGN News | 'No real market left' for medium-sized projects.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Technical Director at 2K Boston Christopher Kline has said that while his studio was preparing to make BioShock, they decided casual games and million-dollar blockbusters were the only types of titles that could turn a profit.

Kline believes that there is really no viable market between the casual gaming scene and massive titles such as BioShock. "I think what we realised, which really started that transition back at Irrational, we were doing games that I'd say were mid-budget – maybe USD 3-4 million – that there was no real market left," he told GamesIndustry.biz.

"You'd have to do something like what EA is doing and go into the casual market, or you've got to go for a really big blockbuster - just because of the economics, especially for the small independent developers, you're really squeezed out of the middle," Kline stated.

Kline said that mid-sized games will continue to be developed, but practically, projects of that type will be few and far between. "I think you can probably still get contracts for that kind of work, but there's not a lot of hope there for developers being able to survive - just not enough money to develop new IP and keep staff going."

Of course there's no bloody market for mid-budget games, they're still charging full f'n price for them!! Who would pay full price for a mid-budget game when you can get a big budget game for the same price?

Funny, I just had a conversation about that on NeoGAF today.

So what about Indie games?

I think it's less about the budget and more about the quality of the final product, really.

Well more money that goes into a game means more effort goes into the game, so its more polished and (sometimes just or) has more content.

Yeah, that was a strange thing to say.

I think the Bioshock dev is essentially correct, but you can go even further than just casual games, and throw in indie games as well.

You see it all the time. When someone releases something that's not right up there, you hear cries of "should have made it a [insert download service here] title".

What are some middle-tier games? I don't think i've bought anything that i haven't deemed somewhat "epic".

The only games that might qualify are bargain bin games i picked up last year: COD3, Blazing Angels, Saints Row, GHII...

How about Earth Defense Force on the 360, that was pretty shocking (in a so bad its good kinda way)

Indie games can be classed as casual games. In the event they sell well, they tend to do so on the "blockbuster" level (eg Audiosurf).

(edit: to clarify, I'm pretty sure that by 'casual' games he doesn't mean The Sims, or Wii Fit, but rather low-budget niche games).

I think every gaming company no matter how big or small should have a fair go.
