Australian sales charts, week ending 15/06/08

PALGN News | Solid.
The PlayStation 3's flagship game has arrived, and it has rocketed straight to the top of the Australian sales charts. We're talking about none other than Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, of course. Holding firm in second behind Konami's magnum opus is Wii Play, while last week's champion, Mario Kart Wii, fell two places to three. The latest Lego romp, Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, slipped slightly from last week, but is still going strong at four. Former chart kingpin Wii Fit hasn't budged from since last week, staying put at five.

Sneaking its way into the charts waving a big katana is Ninja Gaiden 2 on the Xbox 360 - you can read our review full of glowing praise here. Seven sees the PlayStation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto 4, unmoved from last week, with Singstar Party Hits falling to end this week in eighth place. At nine it's Grand Theft Auto IV again, this time on the Xbox 360, making it the first week since release that the PS3 version has outsold its 360 counterpart. Wrapping up things at ten is perennial charter Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

The charts are updated weekly and are provided by those wonderful people at GfK.

Good to see games like MGS4 and Ninja Gaiden in the top then.

i find it odd that they have a seperate chart for ps3 and xbox360 and then count gta iv as 2 seperate items in the overall chart. thats like distinguishing between buying thriller on lp or tape and having it in the top 40 twice.

It's always been done this way as far as I know. They are separate SKUs so they should be ranked differently. Either way I'm surprised to see PS3 GTA selling more than the 360 one now. It's still boggles the mind to see Nintendo own these charts - and to think this is a bad week for them!

I guess the rankings are done like this to convey the most information. If they added up across all the platforms I'm guessing the cross platform titles like Guitar Hero and Lego Indian Jones would tend to dominate.

There's also the problem of when you add them up and when you don't. Sure ps3 GTA and 360 GTA are basically identical, but what about DS lego indie and 360 lego indie? What about The Force Unleashed for Wii and ps3/360?

There's also the possibility that titles could appear in the 'total top 10' but not in individual platform top 10s which could confuse things more and not less.

Sometimes the simplest option is the best option.

I'm wondering when the 'PC Games' rankings will finally be renamed "The Sims" rankings.
