New Oddworld game on the way

PALGN News | Someone has been listening to our prayers.
A new title in the Oddworld series seemed like an impossible dream, with the series stagnant ever since the solid Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath was released in 2005. But, it has been revealed that a new game is on the way.

Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun confirmed a new title set in the Oddworld universe is in the planning stages, while giving a recent talk at a Canadian university. He said the game would "harness a cinematic scale" that would put the game on par with CGI films. The new title was also recently confirmed by Lorne Lanning, the series creator of Oddworld, who confirmed the news to Gamesindustry.biz.

Braun didn't provide any more information on the game, but did reveal that the title was "years" down the line.

Never having owned an XBox console I've only played a little of Munch's odyssey, which from what I played I didn't like)and have only watched a friend play the other one, which looked pretty darn fun.But I do love the series from it's PS1 days so I'm definitely looking forward to this game. It is gonna be on PS3 right?

Probably, maybe both 360 and PS3? Maybe even Wii? Or, dare i say it, the PC?

oddworld on the Wii would be just plain awesome. I am sure they would work the fart back in and get the wiimote involved somehow:P

Huh? I thought Oddworld Inhabitants closed it's doors not too long ago? Did they rise from the grave, or is the creator shipping the idea to another studio?

Either way, I'm glad to hear the series coming back but I'm curious as to how they plan on doing it. Side scrolling puzzler? Or pseudo FPS adventure? Or maybe something else entirely...

Hopefully, we don't get another 3D one. The next game should be a-la New Super Mario Bros, with 3D graphics and 2D gameplay combined...

^ If it was on the DS, maybe.

Personally, I'd love it if they made two games; the first (and main) game being on the 360/PS3 that either kept the adventure FPS theme from Stranger's Wrath or another game in a different direction entirely. The second being an XBLA/PSN title that was in the form of the old side scrolling games with the two combining somehow to make one awesome Oddworld experience. It won't happen but damn it would be nice if developers starting doing Arcade/PSN titles that were in sync with their retail titles or whatever.

Anyway a new Oddworld game = anticipation from me. Now to play the (massive) waiting game until it is released...

I read about this the other day when it was a rumour, good to see it's confirmed. Oddworld Inhabitants have had some of the best graphics in the biz, from the first few Ps1 games upto Stranger's Wrath on the Xbox (some of my fave CGI from that era). I don't think Oddworld Inhabitants closed their doors, after the bad publishing from EA of Stranger's Wrath Lorne Lanning wanted to take the company into the movie/animation biz. These reports of the game being very cinematic and much like a CGI film fits in directly with what Lorne Lanning wanted to do so all of this points to the kind of experience i'm looking for in games: awesome graphics, kooky worlds/characters and a very cinematic feel (usually meaning the game will focus on single-player). The only question now is what sort of genre they're going to go with? I hope it's an action/platformer kinda like Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee but heaps better and much more action oriented, maybe a cross between Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath.

This is very exciting news. Oddworld in my opinion is one of the most genius gaming franchises ever created.

I just wish that the 360 was properly backwards compatible with Munch's Oddysee - it works, but the sound is basically muted which makes it kind of hard to issue vocal commands etc.

I remember Lanning had some very ambitious plans for the Oddworld series, it was intended to be a quintology, Abe was the first component, Munch was the second, and it would keep going from there, with the idea that each character would take you a step up in the Oddworld universe. There was even an Oddworld RTS in the works pitting nature against industry. It was such a shame to see it all fold so this glimmer of hope is exciting.

It's called Oddworld: Bolts and Screws.

In this game, you don't escape any factories. Instead, you must make cars out of various parts, and driv or fly to different factories, to save your betheren.

Oh and the main character is there somewhere.

Great to hear Oddworld has something coming. Stranger's Wrath was such a damn good game and really didn't get the reception it deserved. I'd really love to see a sequel to it someday
