The PALGN Podcast, Episode 25

PALGN Feature | Random Walk: DS dominance, art design vs. realism, and over-reliance on visuals.
Clocking in at 42 minutes and 24 seconds, Tristan, Jeremy, and Evan go for a Random Walk this week, a smattering of whatever's on our brains at the moment. In a rather visually-focused episode, Evan kicks off the proceedings by marveling at the variety of games available on the DS. Tristan follows it up with speculation around why we become so focused on realism in graphics when good art design ages so well. And Jeremy closes it off by debating whether or not the industry has an over-reliance on visuals in game design. Wrapping it up in this week's PALGN's Picks, Jeremy returns to Tales of Symphonia, one of the highest quality RPGs on the Gamecube.

This week's outro mix is Final Fantasy III 'DeathontheSnowField', created by AmIEvil and distributed by OverClocked ReMix (www.ocremix.org). For the full bitrate version, why not head over to OverClocked ReMix and download it?

As you've probably figured out by now, Random Walk came a bit early this month. Scheduling issues prevented us from recording our regular in-depth episode, but fear not - we've got a surprise that should be kicking off within the next few days, bringing us back to our regularly scheduled podcast next week.

Okami didn't sell becasue
a) it was late PS2 when "gamers" had moved onto the next gen
b) it was expected that it would come for the wii so some held off for that
c) it was a "zelda" clone released very close to zelda wii so it had some "i just did this" symption
d) it was asian culture themed which would appear unfamilar to us
e) it wasn't FPS (the apparent genre of choice)
f) it was from capcom - a company better known for arcde/fighitng games then adventure games
g) related to this capcom games a typically hard, and it was a long adventure - both things working agains casual gamers
h) marketing (there was none)

Good response! What I was getting at (albeit without enough explanation) is that I would have expected the sales figures would have been better than tey were, even taking those into account. But, I guess your first point's very true - if it's too late in the lifecycle, it doesn't matter how good the game is, most people probably won't buy it.

I'd debate the 'coming to Wii' one - lots of people were hoping for it, but there was never any certainty that it would be ported. Otherwise, all very good points.

Poor Tristan. Not only lost overseas, but lost in the first few minutes of the podcast! icon_razz.gif
