Australian sales charts, week ending 27/04/08

PALGN News | A bunch of new entries and a new champion.
It's a brand new entry that has rushed straight to the top of the charts this week - Mario Kart Wii of course, which comes as no surprise given the immense popularity of the series amongst all age groups. Even old people like it, and we all know old people hate games. PlayStation 3 shooter Time Crisis 4 received almost as warm as a reception, taking the second slot on its debut. Making it a trifecta of new entries at the top of the charts is the Wii Sports inspired EA Playground for the DS at number three. As a result of all these newbies, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock for the PS2 slipped, but only one spot to four. Last week's champion, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games wasn't so lucky, falling all the way to five.

Keeping the theme of new entrants going is High School Musical for the Nintendo Wii, entering the charts at six. More Brain Training made another chart re-entry at seven, continuing to bounce around like a big yo-yo. A more obscure re-entry is at eight, in the form of Singstar Legends, despite being released in 2006. Brain Training took a big hit, dropping seven places to nine, while the DS version of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games ends the charts at ten.

Coming to the charts next week: Grand Theft Auto IV.

The charts are updated weekly and are provided by those wonderful people at GfK.

Coming to the charts next week: Grand Theft Auto IV.
The question is though, what version will dominate? I bet it will be the 360, but I hope the PS3 version makes the 2nd place.

My money's on the 360. Larger install base = win.

I'm guessing GTAIV the game sells more on 360, but GTAIV sells more PS3's than 360's. Does Australia have a weekly/monthly hardware chart?

Sold more by a smallish but decent margin in the UK, should move enough units to keep both Sony and Microsoft happy.

^Do those UK sales stats include online stores?

A fair few GTA4 on 360 disks would have been exported rather than played domesticly.

No so much GTA4 on PS3 as asian online retailers could offer better prices.

i've only seen Day 1 sales figures, but they look something like this:
US: 2.5 Million units, 60% of which were on XBox
UK: 609,000 units, 55% of which were on XBox
Europe: 1.7 Million units, 60% of which were on PS3.

to put it into perspective, Halo 3 had 4.2 Million units in stores the day before release, and this looks to have broken that without the UK, nor Au's help (which was surely an addition 100k, at least?)
and the previous Day One record holder in the UK was GTA: San Andreas, which sold 501,000 units in the first 24 hours, which was well and truly smashed.

but hey, i suppose these are comments for next week icon_wink.gif

(numbers were from various articles on n4g.com)

EDIT: to answer PimpHat's query, the place i read the UK numbers said something along the lines of "Online and High Street sales".

i heard that PS3 GTAIV sales were at 3 to 1 in some places, but i guess it doenst matter if all stores sell out of both consoles copies in the same week does it....

Good point, I doubt any reported sales figures (except unofficial ones) include sites where people would import through.

5 mates have bought it on 360 (3 SE) and 5 bought the PS3 version (3 were importing) along with my import copy hopefully arriving late next week. GTAIV is certainly the quickest selling game of all time, helps that they went multiplatform launch this time.
