POTW Results: Will you be purchasing GTA IV locally or importing?

PALGN News | The results may surprise you.
Last week we ran a poll asking our readers whether they will be purchasing Grand Theft Auto IV in Australia or importing the game. Well, we had a staggering response, with 1333 people responding to the poll.

Of those 1333, 651 of them (or 48.84%) said they would import Grand Theft Auto IV. 543 people (or 40.74%) said they would be purchasing GTA IV locally and 139 (or 10.43%) said they wouldn't be purchasing Grand Theft Auto IV, quite interesting results. Look out for our next Poll of the Week shortly on PALGN.

The poll of the week is an awesome idea, but I really think that the results need to be presented better. A nice graphic or pie chart would be good enough.

Rick rolled...

I am also of the minority in not having the slightest bit interest in GTA, and would also like to see snazzy excel skills. So great idea really. icon_biggrin.gif

I will most likely pick this game up second hand in six years or so when
it is well and truly out of date, so that's why I voted as 'not purchasing'.

I'd like to see a follow up poll to this a year later that shows percentage of the 600 people who voted to import who caved while browsing at EB one day and just bought the bloody thing.

I would be one of these people.

Instead of purchasing it for $65 from Play-Asia I caved in and bought it at JB for $85 because of the shiny cover. I also bought it as a vanity thing so I could look all buff, masculine and hardcore in the line whilst also covering my original game purchase, Viva Pinata.

I wonder how many people are buying it based on media coverage instead of precedent plays. I've never played any Grand Theft Auto game before.

Fancy graphs are only as good as the data behind them. The poll options need to be better thought out. For example, "I won't be buying" could have easily been broken up into "I'm waiting for the PC version" and "I have no interest in the game"; whereas "Importing" could have been broken up into "Importing due to price", "Importing due to censored content", or both.

just do it like gamefaqs.com

anyway, I didn't answer the poll since I don't have a ps3 or 360 but I do want to buy the game to play D:

The results are obviously internet based as an on the street poll would have much less importing. People who follow a game on the net are more likely to know how to import, and how cheaper/etc. it can be. The results of the next poll look to be pretty interesting too.

If this doesn't send a message to publishers to lower prices and the government to get us an R rating then nothing does, 54.5% of people buying the game are importing! That's alot of money being sent over seas and shows discontent with local distribution and discontent there should be, at least discontent, probably outrage, but not quite homicidal outrage... yet icon_wink.gif

Before I viewed the results of the poll, I guessed that the majority of people voted that they would buy the game locally. Last week, the majority voted to import the game. From what I have seen so far, the polls always turned around and go the other way, so I thought it would be the same for this poll. But I was wrong.

Also, I agree with everyone here that the results could be displayed as a pie chart.

54.5% of a group of savvy gamers does not reflect current market trends, if it did GTAIV would not have broken any records on sales and would have really sucked the big one where sales would reflect the desire, not a small fraction of the consumer base for the product.

the only way to send a message as such would be an actual state wide consumer boycott of said title to impact sales and make note of the reasons why, publishers would simply view this type of data as inconsequential due to the low number compared to sales. now maybe if we had millions and 54% were still importing it'd be fine to be all "screw you publishers/government/ community groups give us our R rating" but right now, it'd translate to nothing.

Shhhh, we all know that but I'm hoping they don't icon_wink.gif

Besides, since that's 54.5% of the informed people it would only really take informing other people to make that the national average. I wouldn't mind picketing EB with big signs displaying the advantages of importing vs buying in the store icon_wink.gif. If enough stores were picketed then eventually EB and other game stores would have to demand lower prices from their suppliers.

I thought Xbox 360 versions of GTAIV were region locked?

They are - it just means that you can't import an NTSC copy and expect it to work on a PAL console, it doesn't stop you from importing a copy from the UK (PAL, uncensored) and playing it on your PAL console though.

Ah ok - that makes sense, then. Thanks for the clarification!
