The PALGN Podcast, Episode 21

PALGN Feature | PALGN Focus: Zelda.
Clocking in at around an hour and a half, this week's focus episode sees David, Daniel, and Evan travel to Hyrule to discuss one of the longest running franchises around, Zelda. We reminisce on our first experiences with the series, ranging from the original golden NES cartridge to the Nintendo 64 and debate how the series has managed to maintain such intense popularity over such a long period of time. We reflect on what makes Zelda Zelda and try and identify why others have tried yet so few have succeeded in replicating the formula. We prognosticate on where the series is likely to go from here - will we see another release on the Wii, or are we done with the series? And, would it even be smart for Nintendo to do another Zelda at all?

This week's music arranged by our resident maestro, Daniel Golding.

Okami is the obvious P2 zelda. I think thats also the appeal of Beyond good and evil --- its basically xbox zelda.

Sphinx and the cursed mummy also tickles this itch.

*Yes this was posted just to spread the beyond good and evil love*

Okami will soon be out on the Wii, and BG&E was out on all three platforms and PC (I had it on Cube), meaning that they aren't "the other platform's" take on the Zelda formula.

I think it's more that it's grown up as we have, and it Link and Co still have a sort of innocence and charm, it's still the classic good v evil, save the princess story.

(Haven't heard the podcast yet so I could be repeating what has already been said)

I've been meaning to play Beyond Good and Evil for quite a while now - along with Wind Waker and Eternal Darkness, I picked up the Cube version when I bought a Wii. I'm no further with Wind Waker, but I have started Eternal Darkness. Maybe I'll start BG&E next ...

Like we talk about in the Podcast, I think Zelda's unique precisely because of its history - there's a lot of mechanics development that's happened over the last 20 odd years, and there's a reason core Zelda games feel so polished. Okami did an amazing job given the lack of history it had, and while I've only touched it, I'm actually really looking forward to checking it out on the Wii. Copying Zelda's not a feat for the faint of heart ...
