Secret agent RPG on the way

PALGN News | Called Alpha Protocol, from Obsidian.
Details of Obsidian's next project have leaked, revealing that the studio is hard at work a secret agent RPG called Alpha Protocol.

Taking cues from successful super spies Jason Bourne, James Bond and Jack Bauer, Alpha Protocol puts players in the role of rookie secret agent Michael Thornton, as they slowly work their way up the ladder after a mission goes horribly awry.

Thornton has ten upgradable skills at his disposal, each of which has ten ranks. Apparently, these aren't boring old skills like shooting accuracy, but will rather help change how the player will perceive the situation. Interesting. This will also shape how the player plays the game, be it by taking a stealth approach, shooting everyone, or somewhere in between.

The game takes a third-person perspective and the combat takes place in real time, apparently having a lot in common with Mass Effect and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. As well as the obvious gun fights, gadgets will also play a role, as you would expect from any spy worth his salt.

Another common thread with Mass Effect is the dialog, allowing players to coerce those they talk to, or charm them. However, you can't repeat conversations for an alternate outcome.

Alpha Protocol allows players to have multiple missions at once, which could take them all over the globe. Plus, there are also a whole host of romantic subplots, with no need to be faithful in true James Bond style.

This one is currently set for a Q2 release next year, on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Just as well they didn't set it in the future, I might have confused that blurb with Deus Ex, wait, too late.

Just kidding, more games of that ilk are just fine by me. icon_smile.gif

Anyone want to take bets on how many game-breaking bugs and incorrectly implimented -or dropped completely- features we'll see?

They make good games, but Obsidian's track record speaks for itself... their QA department needs to be taken out back and shot. Or better yet, given a tour of Valve to be shown how you make a game correctly.
