R18+ rating for games being considered in Australia

PALGN News | We've heard this before.
According to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, the new Federal Government of Australia is considering a review to make the R18+ rating available to games. Unlike all other media in Australia, currently games can only be rated up to MA15+, and any game not meeting the requirements for that rating is simply banned for sale in the country.

A spokesman for Bob Debus, Minister for Home Affairs, said the issue would be discussed in March. However, while the previous government wasn't particularly keen on the higher rating being available for games, in the past it was typically just as likely one of the states who blocked the passage of the legislation. For the rating legislation to be changed, the attorneys-general of each state must all agree on the issue, so just one state can block the legislation for the whole country.

In 2002 a similar proposal was not passed due to opposition from then Federal Attorney-General Daryl Williams, primarily because it did not have the support of some South Australian senators and South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson. The government argued that games should not have an R18+ rating because of "the likelihood of children gaining access to adult computer games increases if the material is legally available."

However, even some child protection advocates have called for the R18+ rating for games, arguing that the lack of an adult rating unhelpfully reinforces the 'games are only for children' stigma, and that some games have been squeezed in under the MA15+ rating by a pressured ratings board.

Since 2001, eighteen games have been banned by the ratings board in Australia, including the initial submission of Grand Theft Auto III, BMX XXX, Mark Ecko's Getting Up and recently, Dark Sector.

Well, predictably, looks like it's not happening:

I'm speechless at the sheer stupidity of Mr Atkinson and of the entire system.
You've never met a fundamentalist Christian before, have you?

Michael Atkinson isn't thinking of the children - he's doing this because it's God's Work. Joining of church and state ftw.

well he should quit then, as his duty is to this country and his state before it is to god

Add a catpic with that quote(i dunno, a cat with a pope hat, or a cat in the popemobile) and you'll get my coveted plus.

'Karai works hard for the plusses, he works hard for the plusses...'

Oh Jibbs... I'll do anything for a plus, but I won't do that!

(Why do I suddenly feel so dirty?)

The true corruption of man's ability to shape his own fate was the invention of a being that shapes it for him. I have nothing against people who choose to believe in a god(s), the same way I have an indifference to those who believe in faries, but when an archaic religion starts infringing on a decision that affects me? Now I'm pissed.

I smell a road trip to his office and wild shenanigans ensuing.

i did post his email, for anyone that wants to give him an earful or in this case an eyeful, to his assistant no doubt

I would post an email too, but to be honest, I don't think it will get read. I might still write one though, if I work keeps boring me.

he would find it hard to ignore volume rather than content, so i say do it....

but then again he is ignoring nearly every sane person in this country, i reckon he's a bit like f'tang f'tang ole biscuit barrel (slighlty silly party)

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but i'm just wondering, let's say the R rating does get approved. Would previously banned games have their RC status uplifted?

In the meantime...

Most likely but I think the banned games need to reapply to get a rating though, so it depends if the company wants to release it in Australia.

yes, they would have to resubmit it, mo money for the oflc!

People you need to think of the future for a R+. OFLC goes on how real the violence looks, with graphics getting better and better more games are going to be banned icon_sad.gif. For example i don't think we will see Ninja Gaiden 2 here uncut icon_sad.gif.

I just got an email back from the attorney generals office wanting to know my postal address so he can correspond with me, obviously they already have standard response v1.2 working on it.

This is why orginised religion, and members of it, should eb banned from meddelign in politics....its been a problem since before the onset of the roman catholic church for christs sake, it needs to come to an end!

Did I miss something here? Where was religion even mentioned? (I haven't been following the issue in the news). What makes you think only Christians would be opposed to violence in video games?

I guess people are working on the assumption that if you're a conservative, you're a Christian. A generalisation perhaps, but not an unfair one. The two generally go hand in hand.

Having looked at Mr Atkinson's Wikipedia entry, it says that he has
'particular interest in Christian values.'

sorry, i thought peopel realised that he was christian from the last time this came up. although, the point still stands. That bioshock almsot got RC is a telling sign, as games gette better, and graphics get better, a catagory needs to be inplace for adult gamers to reccognise the rights of adults to view and interact with entertainment of their choice. censorship is wrong.
