Call of Duty 4 top selling game of 07

PALGN News | Seven million units worldwide.
Activision has announced that sales data from GfK, Chart Track and NPD has revealed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare to be the highest selling game worldwide in 2007.

The game has proven to be stunningly successful since launch. As if becoming the most popular game on Xbox Live last week and scoring a huge 9.0 from us wasn't enough, the game has also managed to shift over seven million copies worldwide.

"We're very excited about this achievement especially given so many competitive titles this year," said Senior Vice President of Activision, Will Kassoy.

This no doubt means that many of you are keen on information on the currently enigmatic Call of Duty 5. We will keep you informed.

Halo 3 apparently has sold 8.1 million

I believe Microsoft's numbers are "shipped" rather than sold.

is this only on x360 or over all consoles because CoD 4 was on just about everything, i mean it was even on DS

That would be the all platform figure.

Hmm, not that this is necessarily incorrect, but you need a few caveats to make it so.

First, it's not really worldwide, only the US, UK, and a few European countries. They do state this, but still...

Second, this does not include Wii Sports or Wii Play. Fair enough, except that most trackers do count Wii Play as a game, so saying you sold the most 'according to these trackers' isn't really true, it's more 'according to what we define as a real game according to these trackers'. Once again, fair enough, but it doesn't mention 'does not include Wii Play', which sold something like 11 million for the year.

It also appears they are doing an annoying thing Chart-Track (the UK tracker) does - they count Nintendogs and Pokemon versions as separate games, yet multi-platform releases (for example, FIFA on PS2/PS3/GCN/XB/360/PSP/DS/PC/GBA) as the same game, even though they can be much more different then Pokemon versions are. This figure no doubt counts the DS version of COD4 as the same game as the PS360 version. But if Pokemon Diamond/Pearl are counted together, they would have sold at least 10 million for the year (including only one million in Japan, because it was a 2006 game there). It's even possible (though unlikely in this case) that Halo 3 collectors editions are counted separately from the regular game, as some trackers do count them separately.

Finally, COD4 is just so far behind both Halo 3 and Guitar Hero III (all platforms) in the US it must have sold some seriously insane numbers in Europe. Halo sold almost five million in the US, GH3 is at something like six million in the US, so both must not be very popular in Europe at all relative to America. Of course, Activision is unlikely to mis-represent GH3's sales icon_lol.gif

^ It probably sold like mad in Germany since it's the first of the Call of Duty series not feature them as the antagonists...
